Last-minute drama in Frankfurt! Werder beat Frankfurt this afternoon thanks to a stoppage-time free kick from Milot Rashica. Yuya Osako had put Werder 1-0 up in the 25th minute of the game, with a helping hand from VAR. Shortly afterwards, Frankfurt’s Jetro Willems picked up a straight red card which put his team down to ten. After the break, Jiri Pavlenka brought down Mijat Gacinovic and conceded a penalty. The Werder goalkeeper had to leave the pitch on a stretcher following the collision, before Sebastien Haller converted the spot kick. SVW then bagged all three points in dramatic fashion with almost the last kick of the game. Milot Rashica stepped up and curled in a wonderful free-kick to secure Werder’s first win of the season.

Line-up and formation: Martin Harnik was back from injury and went straight into the starting XI, replacing Florian Kainz. Apart from that, Florian Kohfeldt named the same side that drew against Hannover last weekend.

Osako puts Werder in front

11 mins: Shortly after Frankfurt defender Carlos Salcedo goes off injured, the ball comes to Maxi Eggestein in the box and he appears to be bundled over. The ref waves play on.

17 mins: Good chance for Max Kruse! A cross comes into the box and finds the Werder captain unmarked at the back post, but his header is straight at Trapp!

25 mins: Werder celebrate, then stop, then celebrate again! Yuya Osako calmly finishes from Eggestein’s through ball but the goal is ruled out for offside. VAR comes into play and shows that the Japan international was, in fact, onside, and the goal is given!

30 mins: Another chance! Kruse gets the ball out wide to Harnik, who plays it into the box towards Osako. The forward tries to turn the ball towards goal, but a Frankfurt defender gets a great block in.

33 mins: Red card for Jetro Willems! The Frankfurt man raises his hands towards the face of Theodor Gebre Selassie and is immediately dismissed by the referee. Werder are now a goal and a man up!

45 mins: SVW lead at the break after a hectic first half. There have been chances to add a second, and Werder look solid in defence. Jiri Pavlenka has had a quiet afternoon.

Rashica’s stunner wins the game

49 mins: A poor start to the second half. Ludwig Augustinsson’s header back to Pavlenka is short and Mijat Gacinovic nips in. The midfielder tries to take the ball around the onrushing goalkeeper, but he’s brought down and Frankfurt have a penalty. There’s a lengthy stoppage as Pavlenka receives treatment before leaving the field on a stretcher, with Luca Plogmann coming on to replace him for his Bundesliga debut. Sebastien Heller converts the penalty.

60 mins: This time it really is offside. The move is started by substitute Claudio Pizarro, with Augustinsson crossing from the left and Osako again applying the finish. However, replays show that the striker had strayed offside.

72 mins: Werder have assumed control of the game and are pushing for the winner. Max Kruse has a shot from distance that Trapp has to put behind for a corner.

77 mins: Gebre Selassie almost scores for the second week in a row! His shot from a Kruse corner is cleared off the line by a Frankfurt defender.

83 mins: Pizarro has a chance! The ball comes to Piza in the box but he puts his shot over the bar. Milot Rashica comes on for Philipp Bargfrede as Werder look to push for the win.

90 mins: Rashica is played through on goal but Trapp is equal to his effort!

90+7 mins: GOOOOOOAAAAALLLLL! Rashica bends in a free-kick from 30 yards!

90+7 mins: The ref blows for full time! What a win!

Summary: Werder looked to have the game under control until Ludwig Augustinsson’s poor header led to a Frankfurt equaliser. However, SVW took the game by the scruff of the neck and really pushed on to get the win. After several missed chances, it was Milot Rashica’s wonderful free kick in the last minute of the game that bagged the three points! Werder’s next game is a friendly against FC Emmen this Tuesday, with their next Bundesliga game against FC Nürnberg on Sunday 16 September.
