Eggestein scores twice as Werder get three points at Schalke

The international break doesn’t seem to have interfered with Werder’s rhythm, with the Green-Whites winning 2-0 away at Schalke in their first game back! Maximillian Eggestein came of age in Werder’s third away win of the season, proving to be the matchwinner after scoring two goals. There wasn’t much action in an even first half, until Maxi stepped up in the 43rd minute to fire Werder ahead. Again, the goal was a powerful effort from outside the box. The second half was more open, but that didn’t stop the Green-Whites’ maestro in midfield. Eggestein put Werder two in front, this time with his left foot, to secure a huge three points on the road and shoot his club up into second place in the Bundesliga.

Lineup and formation: Milos Veljkovic slotted straight back into the starting XI following his suspension. The only other change to the team was in midfield, with Nuri Sahin coming in for the injured Philipp Bargfrede. The Green-Whites once again lined up in a 4-3-3 formation.

5 mins: Burgstaller has the first chance of the game after getting past Nuri Sahin, but he fires over the crossbar.

22 mins: First chance for Werder! Gebre Selassie gets down the right wing and crosses, but the ball is just too high for Florian Kainz and he can’t get a good connection on the header.

43 mins: MAXI EGGESTEIN! The young midfielder puts Werder in front from nowhere! Kruse keeps the ball well before picking out Eggestein on the edge of the box and you know the rest! Maxi hammers a right-footed shot into the corner of the goal!

45 mins: Half time. It’s been a tight first half but Maxi Eggestein’s goal on the stroke of half time means Werder are in front at the break!

53 mins: Schalke have started the second half well, with a few chances. The most recent of them comes through McKennie, but Pavlenka is equal to his effort.

56 mins: Another save from Pavlas, this time from Burgstaller!

63 mins: Werder need to get a hold in the game, here. This time, Uth puts a dangerous ball into the box, with McKennie and Di Santo both only a whisker away from making contact.

66 mins: MAAXXXIIII! He just can’t stop scoring! Kruse crosses from the left, and Gebre Selassie manages to cut the ball back to Eggestein. Maxi takes a couple of touches, before firing into the bottom corner!

72 mins: Naldo comes close with a header, but Pavlas is there to push the ball away!

74 mins: Almost 0-3! Max Kruse whips the ball towards goal from around 25 yards, but it flashes wide of the post.

87 mins: Unbelievable from Pavlas! Uth has a bullet header, but the goalkeeper somehow manages to tip the ball onto the bar!

90+4 mins: What a result here for Werder! Two goals from Maxi Eggestein mean that the three points are heading back to Bremen!
