After battling for 90 minutes, Werder were forced to take a point at home to Nürnberg. The away side equalised in injury time to cancel out a first-half wonder goal from Maxi Eggestein. Werder were well on top in the first half, playing good football and creating chances. Their play was rewarded with a goal from Maxi Eggestein – a powerful hit from outside the box. The second half was a much more even affair, and Nürnberg started to threaten. The first warning sign came in the 60th minute, when they had a goal ruled out for offside by VAR. Werder went into extra time with a one-goal advantage and were punished for not finishing the game off. In the 92nd minute, Nürnberg substitute Misidjan fired his club level, meaning the points were shared at the Weserstadion.

Line-up and formation: Florian Kohfeldt went with the same starting XI that he named away at Eintracht Frankfurt in Werder’s last Bundesliga game. Jiri Pavlenka recovered from his concussion to start and the usual back four took their places in front of him: Gebre Selassie, Moisander, Veljkovic and Augustinsson. Bargfrede, Klaassen and Maximilian Eggestein made up the midfield, with Harnik, Kruse and Osako in attack. New signing Nuri Sahin started on the bench.

Maxi Eggestein puts Werder in front at half time

7 mins: Osako has the first shot of the game. Klaassen gets the ball to the forward but his shot is blocked.

15 mins: The first real chance! Osako is strong in possession and gets the ball to Kruse, who shoots on his left foot but the defender gets across to make a goal-saving block!

20 mins: Eggestein gets down the wing and pulls the ball back for Harnik, but the Austrian’s shot is again blocked by a defender.

26 mins: GOAL FOR WERDER! Maxi Eggestein receives the ball from Klaassen and unleashes an unstoppable strike into the top corner! What a goal from the young midfielder!

45 mins: Half time at the Weserstadion. Werder have been the team on top and look like adding to their lead. They go in with a deserved half-time lead thanks to a wonder goal from Maxi Eggestein!

Misidjan hits back

55 mins: Harnik puts in some good work down the left side before crossing to Eggestein in the middle, but the midfielder can’t get his effort on target!

59 mins: VAR drama! Nürnberg have the ball in the back of the Werder net and celebrate what they think is the equaliser, but the referee consults VAR and rules the goal out for offside!

71 mins: Nuri Sahin comes on for his Werder debut - what noise in the Weserstadion for the new signing! He almost makes an instant impact by playing Osako through, but the forward just can’t get to the ball.

90+2 mins: Misidjan is Nürnberg’s man over in the box. They manage to get the ball to him and he fires in the equaliser 90 seconds from time. Heartbreaking for Werder.

Match summary: A bitter taste in the mouth for Werder following the injury-time equaliser. The Green-Whites should have finished the game off, but they’re forced to take a point.
