An incredibly efficient Leverkusen shocked Florian Kohfeldt’s team as they took the lead through Kevin Volland after only eight minutes. Werder came back strongly into the game and created some good chances but they were punished twice for their inefficiency by the visitors before the break. The half-time score was 0-3 but goals from Pizarro and Osako gave the Green-Whites a chance to mount an unlikely comeback. Despite this, Leverkusen restored their two-goal advantage shortly after. Havertz scored after chipping Pavlenka and then the flood gates opened as a Dragovic goal and a Langkamp own goal gave Leverkusen a 6-2 victory. It turned out to be a tough evening for Werder as they had positive spells but were blown away by devastating Leverkusen counter attacks.

Line up and formation: Head coach Florian Kohfeldt made two changes to the team that beat Schalke 2-0 last week. Sebastian Langkamp replaced Moisander, who had fallen ill and Marco Friedl came in for Florian Kainz as Werder set up in a 3-5-2 formation. Nuri Sahin protected the back four whilst Ludwig Augustinsson and Theodor Gebre Selassie acted as the full backs.

Efficient visitors shock Werder

8th minute: Goal for Leverkusen. 0-1. Kevin Volland gets an early goal for the visitors. Bellarabi plays the ball into the middle to Volland, who is in acres of space and he eventually fires past Jiri Pavlenka with ease under no pressure.

23 minute: Unbelievable! Augustinsson gets in behind after a nice one-two with Kruse! Hradecky can only parry his shot and a Leverkusen player is there to clear Kruse’s rebounds off the line. The score remains 0-1. Come on Green-Whites!

29th minute: Friedl with a mistake and the visitors counter attack but Pavlenka is there to thwart Havertz.

31st minute: The Green-Whites want that equaliser! Max Kruse fires a volley just wide.

38th minute: Goal for Leverkusen. 0-2. Leverkusen stop a Bremen counter attack in the centre circle. The ball is played out wide to Karim Bellarabi but his cross is only parried by Pavlenka. The ball falls at the feet of Julian Brandt who fires in a volley that deflects home.

45th minute: Goal for Leverkusen. 0-3. A sucker-punch before half time. Bellarabi makes it 3-0. Havertz plays the ball over to Volland and he lays off Bellarabi, who is stood all alone. Pavlenka comes out but the ball is dinked over him and also evades the onrushing Werder defenders.

45+1 minute: Half time. Werder are 3-0 down at the break thanks to the efficiency of Leverkusen’s forwards. Leverkusen changed to a five at the back and started to dominate the home side in midfield. The chances to equalise were there but Leverkusen were the more efficient side.

Havertz’s goal kills Werder’s hope

51st minute: Bellarabi continues to cause problems. His strike from outside the box hits the post after it reached him from a deflected cross down the right flank.

55th minute: The first good chance of the half for Werder. Augustinsson plays the ball to Osako but the Japan international fires just wide.

60th minute: GOOAALL by Pizarro! 1-3. Substitute Pizarro fires home in the penalty after some good link-up play. Come on, Green-Whites we can get something here!

62nd minute: GGOOOAALL!! Osako makes it 2-3! INCREDIBLE! The Weser-Stadion goes crazy. Werder can smell blood and score again. After Pizarro knocks the ball into the box, Osako forces the ball over the line. Referee Marco Fritz needs to consult VAR but decides there was no offside and the goal counts!

67th minute: Goal for Leverkusen through Kai Havertz. 2-4. The visitors extend their lead as Havertz dinks the ball over Pavlenka inside the box.

72nd minute: Goal for Leverkusen by Aleksandar Dragovic. 2-5. Brandt fires in a corner but Pavlenka fails to clear the ball and Dragovic forces the ball over the line.

77th minute: Goal for Leverkusen. Own goal by Langkamp. 2-6. Havertz whips in a cross from the right and Langkamp cannot sort his feet out as the ball bounces into an open goal. Unlucky.

86th minute: Pavlenka prevents Leverkusen from extending their lead after a good stop from Volland. By this time, the game is already over.

90th minute: Full time in the Weser-Stadion and Florian Kohfeldt’s unbeaten home record is over. Bayer Leverkusen continued to be clinical in front of goal in the second half despite a valiant effort at a comeback by the Green-Whites. Once Havertz put the visitors 4-2 up, a comeback was out of reach for the home side.
