Werder ended the year with a 3-2 defeat in Leipzig, but the final result didn’t come close to telling the full story. After starting out well, the Green-Whites went 1-0 down. Klostermann was allowed to run through and smash an effort beyond Pavlenka. Shortly before half time, Timo Werner put Leipzig 2-0 up after a massive mix-up in defence. Werder fought back hard and scored twice in ten minutes through captain Max Kruse and a smart finish from Josh Sargent, but Bruma scored three minutes from time to win it for the home side.

Line-up and formation: Florian Kohfeldt made two changes from the game against Hoffenheim midweek, with Milos Veljkovic returning from injury and Milot Rashica also coming back into the side. Osako dropped to the bench, whilst Niklas Moisander missed out with a minor injury. Nuri Sahin returned to the matchday squad.

Starting XI: Pavlenka, Gebre Selassie, Langkamp, Veljkovic, Augustinsson, Klaassen, M. Eggestein, Möhwald, J. Eggestein, Kruse, Rashica.

Subs: Plogmann, Friedl, Sahin, Osako, Sargent, Harnik, Pizarro.

Two sides of Werder

2 mins: Werder have the first chance of the game through Johannes Eggestein, whose shot is blocked.

8 mins: Another chance for Werder – Rashica bursts forward but Gulacsi manages to hold onto his shot.

15 mins: Massive chance for Werder! Jojo Eggestein crosses, Kruse gets something on the ball and it comes to Milot Rashica in front of goal. The winger hits a shot, but there’s a massive block to deny him!

22 mins: Goal for Leipzig. Klostermann runs through midfield and blasts an effort beyond Pavlenka and in off the bar. Werder have been on top and that’s come against the run of play.

37 mins: Gebre Selassie gets his head on a Kruse corner, but his header lands on the roof of the net.

44 mins: 2-0 to Leipzig. Pavlenka plays the ball to Kruse from a goal kick, who plays it back to his goalkeeper. Timo Werner nips in, rounds the goalkeeper and puts his side further in front.

45+1 mins: Werder have been on top, but are somehow 2-0 down at the break.

Werder fight back but suffer late blow

47 mins: Chance for Johannes Eggestein, but he puts his shot wide of the post.

54 mins: Werder are throwing everything at this – forcing Gulacsi into saves. First he parries Jojo Eggestein’s effort, then Veljkovic, and then Augustinsson – unbelievable.

64 mins: Leipzig are also looking dangerous on the break, but Veljkovic gets in at the last minute to clear the danger.

67 mins: GOAL – Kruse gets Werder back into the game! Möhwald plays a great ball through to Gebre Selassie, who crosses the ball. Kruse gets on the end of it and leaves Gulacsi no chance!

77 mins: YEEESSS! Josh Sargent brings Werder level! Osako battles well for the ball and plays it through to Sargent in space. He stays ice cold in front of goal and fires Werder level!

87 mins: Goal for Leipzig. Bruma. The home side go ahead again, as Bruma fires in from inside the box.

90+5 mins: Full time. An action-packed game that Werder deserved to get something out of. The Green-Whites showed great character to come back from 2-0 down, but lose the game after a late goal from Bruma.
