Werder’s last game at home this year ended in a 1-1 draw with TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. It was a game rich in chances, and Werder looked the most likely to win after a dominant second half. The Green-Whites had decent chances before half time through Osako and Kruse, but it was Hoffenheim who took the lead through Bittencourt in the 31st minute. Werder came flying out the blocks in the second half and were on level terms in the 57th minute. It was one-way traffic from there on and the home side really should have won the game but didn’t take their chances.

Line-up and formation: Florian Kohfeldt made three changes from the side that narrowly lost to Borussia Dortmund at the weekend. Möhwald, Osako and Johannes Eggestein came in for Martin Harnik, Milot Rashica and Nuri Sahin, who is out with a minor ankle injury.

Starting XI: Pavlenka, Augustinsson, Moisander, Langkamp, Gebre Selassie, M. Eggestein, Möhwald, Klaassen, Kruse, J. Eggestein, Osako.

Substitutes: Plogmann, Friedl, Kainz, Rashica, Sargent, Harnik, Pizarro.

Chances for Werder, goal for Hoffenheim

12 mins: The first chance of the game goes to Hoffenheim. A good ball goes into the area and finds Kramaric who looks set to put the away side in front, but Langkamp makes an outstanding block and the ball goes clear.

13 mins: Werder should be ahead through Osako! The striker is played through one-on-one with the goalkeeper and somehow puts the ball wide of the post!

25 mins: Kruse! The Werder captain shoots from a free kick from a tight angle, trying to catch out the goalkeeper, but Baumann gets across well to save his effort.

31 mins: Bittencourt puts the away side 1-0 up. Hoffenheim work the ball well and pull it back to Bittencourt in the box, who slots into the corner.

45 mins: Huge save from Pavlenka! Hoffenheim almost score another from a free kick but Pavlas is equal to it.

Gebre Selassie scores the equaliser

46 mins: Werder come flying out the blocks! Eggestein has a chance before Gebre Selassie shoots, but his effort goes wide of the post.

57 mins: GOAL! Gebre Selassie equalizes! Augustinsson puts a great ball into the box and finds his full back on the other side, who nods in for the equaliser!

64 mins: Potential penalty shout for Werder. Rashica, who has just come on, sprints into the box and goes down. There looked to have been contact, but the referee gives nothing.

82 mins: Huge chance for Rashica! The ball comes to him in front of goal, but he blazes over the bar!

89 mins: Another chance for Rashica! He’s played through one-on-one with the keeper, who manages to make the save!

90+4 mins: Full time at the Weserstadion.

Match summary: It can’t be denied that this was an eventful game to end the year at home. Werder took the initiative after half time and came into the ascendency, but they could only get one goal for all their hard work. The result will feel more like two points dropped than a point gained for the home side.
