Werder secured their first home win of the season, beating Hertha Berlin 3-1 at the Weserstadion. After two draws at home so far, the Green-Whites finally gave the 39,100 fans present tonight a reason to celebrate. Martin Harnik (11’) and Milos Veljkovic (45’) put Werder into a deserved half-time lead, before Javairo Dilrosun (53’) pulled one back for the away side. After Werder won a penalty, captain Max Kruse (66’) stepped up and coolly put the ball beyond the Hertha goalkeeper to secure the win.

Line-up and formation: Nuri Sahin was in the starting line-up for the first time since his deadline-day move from Borussia Dortmund, and he looked right at home. The defence was unchanged, with Gebre Selassie, Veljkovic, Moisander and Augustinsson lining up in front of Pavlenka in goal. Sahin, Eggestein and Klaassen made up the midfield, with Osako, Harnik and Kruse playing ahead of them. Philipp Bargfrede, Florian Kainz and Claudio Pizarro dropped to the bench.

25 mins: Another chance! Harnik’s back-heel shot is saved and Davy Klaassen blazes the rebound high over the bar!

41 mins: Chance for Ibisevic. The forward gets past Veljkovic and Pavlenka but shoots over the bar on the turn.

45 mins: GOOAALL for Werder! Sahin delivers a corner and Veljkovic rises highest to head the ball into the back of the net!

Nerves of steel from Captain Kruse

66mins: GOOOAAALLL FOR WERDER! Max Kruse penalty! Gebre Selassie was fouled and Max Kruse kept his nerve to step up and stroke the ball home!

86 mins: Davie Selke has a chance for Hertha but he fires his right-footed curler wide of the post.

90+4 mins: Full time and a first home win of the season for Werder!

Match summary: The Green-Whites were on top tonight right from the first whistle and got the win they deserved. Werder’s slick passing and link-up play left the Hertha defenders for dead on more than one occasion and Nuri Sahin was pulling the strings in midfield on his first start for the club. All in all, a solid and very encouraging win for the home side!
