After Werder didn’t really make an impact in the game in the first half, the Green-Whites were lucky to take something from the game in Berlin. Former Werder striker Davie Selke put the home side ahead (26’) and Hertha led at half time. Werder were better in the second half, but it took a free kick from Claudio Pizarro in the 96th minute of the game to rescue a point. Pizarro is now the oldest goalscorer in Bundesliga history!
Lineup and formation: Florian Kohfeldt named an unchanged starting lineup to the side that defeated FC Augsburg 4-0 last weekend in a 4-3-3 formation. Milot Rashica, who scored a brace last time out, recovered from the injury sustained against Augsburg to start against Hertha.
6 mins: First good opportunity for the Green-Whites! Maxi Eggestein keeps hold of the ball and sends it on to Rashica, whose following shot was blocked by the oncoming Lazaro.
21 mins: Not much going on in both penalty areas in the last 15 minutes but now everyone should be awake again. Kalou finds Selke with a slick pass and takes on a shot. Lucky for Werder the strike rebounds off the post.
25 mins: Goal - 1-0 for Hertha BSC. Lustenberger plays a long pass to Duda, who quickly finds Kalou who is being kept on side by Moisander. Kalou sends the ball on to Selke, who is able this time to find the net. Annoying.
37 mins: Again, it’s the woodwork that saves Werder from conceding a second. Duda hits a powerful free-kick from 25 yards which evades the goalkeeper but ricochets off the crossbar.
45 mins: Half-time in Berlin. Hertha lead after a respectable performance, with a sensible defense performance and a convincing offensive display. Werder doesn’t have enough control of the game, having been rattled early on. The attackers lack composure in the final third and can’t find the right passes.
53 mins: Werder create their first chance of the second half. Kruse shoots from long distance but this doesn’t trouble Jarstein in the Hertha goal.
60 mins: Hertha are back in the ascendency. Duda is allowed too much room on the centre of the pitch and fires towards goal. Sebastian Langkamp blocks the shot at the last moment and clears for a corner. From the resulting corner, Selke fires towards goal but Pavlenka is able to gather.
69 mins: Grujic has a go from distance but doesn’t cause Pavlenka any trouble.
90+4 mins: Last chance for Werder – Josh Sargent does well and wins a free-kick for Werder on the edge of the box.
90+6 mins: GOOOAAALLL for Werder – Claudio Pizarro! The legend hits the free-kick and the ball deflects off the wall and rolls into the net! Claudio Pizarro is the oldest goalscorer in Bundesliga history and rescues a point for Werder!
