Werder suffered a 1-3 home defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach this afternoon. It was a tight first half with both sides respecting each other and waiting for the opposition to slip up. It took Werder 20 minutes to really announce themselves in the game, but they still failed to create any real chances. Borussia made Werder pay for their lack of bite just before the break, when Alassane Plea put the away side into the lead (39’). After half time, the game was decided in just seven minutes. Plea scored his second (48’) and third (52’) goals of the game, shocking everyone in the Weserstadion. Werder then started to come into the game and dominate the ball, but Gladbach looked very dangerous on the counter. The Green-Whites got a goal back through a smart finish from Nuri Sahin (59’) and had chances for even more, but the game finished 3-1.

Lineup and formation: Florian Kohfeldt made two changes from the game away in Mainz last weekend. Nuri Sahin and Martin Harnik came into the side, taking the places of Yuya Osako and Florian Kainz. Werder lined up in a 4-4-2 formation, with a diamond in midfield.
