Ludwig Augustinsson ensured that Werder picked up a point in Freiburg by scoring a last-minute equaliser. Gian-Luca Waldschmidt had put the home side in front with a penalty just before half time (41’). The referee did not give a foul originally, but handball was given after consulting VAR. Jiri Pavlenka kept the Green-Whites in the game in the second half and this proved crucial, as Ludde popped up with the equaliser in injury time.

Lineup and formation: For the first time, two brothers started for Werder in the Bundesliga. Johannes Eggestein was given his first start in the league, lining up alongside his brother, Maxi. Jojo coming in for the injured Philipp Bargfrede was the only change from the game against Borussia Mönchengladbach two weeks ago. Werder lined up in a 4-4-2 formation.

VAR leads to the opener

10 mins: Freiburg have been dominating for the opening 10 minutes. Werder are under a lot of pressure.

21 mins: Martin Harnik is inches away from putting Werder into the lead! There’s a mix-up at the back which allows Harnik to get a toe to the ball after a back pass to Freiburg ‘keeper Alexander Schwolow. However, despite his initial poor touch, the goalkeeper saves from Harnik’s shot.

31 mins: Harnik again! Klaassen is dangerous in the penalty area before the ball drops for Harnik, but he can only flash his effort wide of the post.

33 mins: Another great chance! This time Davy Klaassen has a free header in the centre of the box, but he nods right at the goalkeeper!

42 mins: Goal for Freiburg. The home side appeal for handball after a block from Niklas Moisander and, after consulting VAR, the spot-kick is given. Luca Waldschmidt makes absolutely no mistake, smashing the ball high into the corner of the net.

45+2 mins: Almost the equaliser! Davy Klaassen hits a fierce volley but Schwolow gets down well to save. The ref then blows for half time.

Pavlenka impressive, Ludde equalises

48 mins: Werder almost equalise through Johannes Eggestein, put the goalkeeper makes a save yet again.

50 mins: Great reactions from Pavlenka! Waldschmidt has a chance just in front of goal after a long ball, but Pavlas is there to make the save.

59 mins: Another save! The ball drops to former Werder midfielder Jerome Gondorf in the box and Pavlas is there to pull off a world-class save again!

83 mins: Osako gets his head on a Rashica free kick and Schwolow is there to make the save! The angle is too harsh for Moisander at the far post on the rebound.

85 mins: Pavlenka again keeps Werder in the game. Freiburg counter attack and Pavlas saves from Höler!

87 mins: Höler is through on goal once again, but the post saves Werder this time!

90+2 mins: GOOOOAAAALLLL! There’s confusion in the box following Max Kruse’s corner and Ludwig Augustinsson pops up to smash the ball home! What a time to equalise!

90+4 mins: Full time in Freiburg.

Match summary: It was a game full of chances and both goalkeepers definitely played their part. Both sides could have had more goals on another day, but the game finishes 1-1 after Ludwig Augustinsson’s late equaliser. Werder’s next game is next Saturday, at home to Bayern Munich (15:30 CET).
