Werder narrowly lost out to the record champions in front of 42,100 fans in the Weserstadion on Saturday afternoon. Former Werder star Serge Gnabry was the man who made the difference, scoring either side of half time. He first came on the rebound after good work from Joshua Kimmich and a Jiri Pavelnka save (20’), whilst his second had a bit more luck to it. The ball deflected off a defender and into him after Thomas Müller’s cross (50’). Yuya Osako’s equaliser came in between the two goals. The Japanese striker headed in a wonderful cross from Max Kruse (33’).

Line-up and formation: Florian Kohfeldt made one change from the Freiburg game, bringing in Yuya Osako to replace Martin Harnik. Max Kruse and Johannes Eggestein made up the rest of the attacking trio. Davy Klaassen and Maxi Eggestein played in midfield, with Nuri Sahin sitting deeper. The defence was Theodor Gebre Selassie, Milos Veljkovic, Niklas Moisander and Ludwig Augustinsson, with Jiri Pavlenka in goal.

77 mins: Almost the equaliser! Pizarro, who has just come on, plays the ball through to Kruse and his shot is deflected just wide of the post!

90+2 mins: Moisander is sent off for a second yellow card. Lewandowski knocks the ball past him on the touchline and the defender impedes the striker.
