SV Werder Bremen have signed 18-year-old Romano Schmid. The attacking midfielder makes the move to Werder from RB Salzburg. Werder’s sporting director, Frank Baumann made the announcement on Thursday at noon. The Austria U19 national player’s last appearance came for FC Liefering in the Austrian second division.

“Romano is a talented player, who’s received really good training, originally in Graz and then in Salzburg. We’re delighted to be able to secure his services, however we’d like to loan him out for 18 months so that he can gain experience at a high level. The Netherlands could be an interesting market for that,” explains Frank Baumann.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to reach the Bundesliga, which is why I’m very excited about this opportunity to be able to play for such a big club like Werder sooner or later and make my dream a reality,” says Romano Schmid, confidently looking to the future. Romano Schmid will not immediately begin training with Werder. The 18-year-old must first clear up a few formalities regarding his call-up to the army.

Romano Schmid began his career with USV Vasoldsberg. He moved to SK Sturm Graz in 2009. In May 2017, he became the Austrian Bundesliga’s first player to be born after 1st January 2000 and his goal in July 2017 against FK Austria Wien also made him the first player born after that day to score in the Austrian top division. He moved to league rivals FC Red Bull Salzburg in the summer of 2017.
