Werder continue to ride the waves of success. The Green-Whites ended the evening second in the Bundesliga after defeating Schalke 2-0. “It’s brilliant at the moment,” said a delighted Nuri Sahin. The Werder players don’t want to consider themselves a “top team” just yet, despite the team’s excellent position. “Today’s game was a real test of our quality, a test which we passed brilliantly. However, I still wouldn’t describe as a top team,” explained captain Max Kruse.

On the game:

Nuri Sahin: “We needed everything to beat Schalke today. We managed to get Max in the game after 30 minutes and then our full backs were also more dangerous. I thought we played really well in the second half.”

Max Kruse:  “We were solid at the back and took our chances well. Today’s game was a real test of our quality, a test which we passed brilliantly.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “We are delighted to have won this difficult game. I feel that we also deserved to win it in the end. We found the right balance, scored at the right times – just before half time and in a part of the game where we were under pressure. It was a very mature performance from my team. They never relaxed, kept controlled of the game and deserve a lot of praise.”

Sebastian Langkamp: “It was a tough game at the start. We couldn’t impose ourselves on the game like we wanted to but luckily got the goal just on the stroke of half time. When I came on, we changed the system to cope with their two strikers. I think all the subs did a good job today.”

Niklas Moisander: “We were very effective today. Everybody on the pitch did their job excellently.”

Naldo: “We improved in the second half, but Werder were more efficient than us and deserved to win.”

On Werder’s position:

Nuri Sahin: “It’s a great position for us to be in. We are happy with our amount of points so far and felt we played well enough today. That is more important than where we currently lie in the table.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “We are more than happy to be second in the league, but we all appreciate that there a lot of games left to be played.”

Max Kruse: “We will gladly accept all the praise and euphoria currently surrounding us. We deserve it as well as we play some exciting, attacking football. We know that we have to back up our pre-season aim of finishing in Europe with some strong performances, which we are currently doing. We still have a lot football to play though.”

Sebastian Langkamp: “We need to keep working hard, but of course we are proud of our current position in the table.”

Are Werder a “top team”?

Nuri Sahin: “I think it’s clear that we have a great squad here, with a number of good characters. I wouldn’t yet call us a “top team” though.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “Our points total is very impressive so far, but we’re not yet a “top team”.”

Sebastian Langkamp: “The team is very close with another right now. If we carry on the way we are, we could achieve something massive.”
