The importance of self-criticism

You could see the disappointment in the faces of the Werder players when Virgil Misidjan equalised to snatch a point for Nürnberg last weekend. Four days on, the club’s hierarchy spoke of self-criticism.

“Everyone was wondering how this could have happened. The boys were all concerned and that’s when we started analysing the game together,” said Kohfeldt. However, now they have to look forward to the Augsburg game this weekend. Werder currently sit seventh in the Bundesliga table with five points from three games, but everyone agrees the number should be higher. “We have a different mindset this season. Five points from three games would have been great last season, but this year we’re annoyed about the games that we didn’t win,” said defender Ludwig Augustinsson.

Frank Baumann had similar things to say: “We didn’t get the best results, only getting five points from the games. We were the best team in all three games, but we haven’t reached our full potential yet. We set our own expectations at the start of the season and we’ll go to Augsburg still unbeaten, with the confidence to get the win.”

“Everyone has to take on more responsibility, and that applies to me too. We need to communicate even more on the pitch. As the season goes on, we’ll improve and get more points,” said Augustinsson.

This will to do better is exactly what Florian Kohfeldt wants from his players. He would have rather made the trip to Augsburg with nine instead of five points, but “we can present Augsburg with a lot of problems and then have the chance to win.”
