On Sunday night, millions of sports fans all around the world will have their eyes fixed on Atlanta. The New England Patriots are set to take on the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII. Werder also have some Super Bowl fans in their ranks, with Claudio Pizarro and Josh Sargent extremely excited for the game.
Sargent, a rams fan, discusses what positions he used to play at school, and Claudio Pizarro draws a comparison between himself and Tom Brady.
WERDER.DE: Josh, we’ve heard that you used to play American Football. Is that true?
Josh Sargent: “Yeah, it was just for a year, but it was a good year. I tried out different positions. My main positions were runningback, linebacker, and obviously kicker. My team got a lot of extra points, as you got two points after a touchdown and a point after a conversion, the reverse of the NFL rule.
WERDER.DE: Will you guys be watching the Super Bowl this year?
Claudio Pizarro: I think definitely. I normally watch it with my family, who are big fans too. It’ll be difficult this year because we’ve got the DFB-Pokal game against Dortmund during the week. But you have to deal with stuff like that…”
Josh Sargent: “I hope that I can watch it somehow.”
WERDER.DE: Did you used to watch the Super Bowl with loads of chicken wings, Coca Cola and other fast food back home?
Josh Sargent (laughs): “Yeah, we met up and watched it at someone’s house every year. The parents drink a bit, the kids are running around and there’s lots of food. That was always a good time for me and I’ll miss it this year. But I hope something will happen probably with less junk food!”
WERDER.DE: We know that Claudio’s favourite player is Russell Wilson, but who’s your favourite, Josh?
Josh Sargent: “I have massive respect for Tom Brady’s performances, but my favourite player is the Rams’ runningback Todd Gurley.”

WERDER.DE: Quarterback Tom Brady is playing in the Super Bowl for the ninth time and has won six already. What makes him so unique?
Josh Sargent: “There were a lot of doubters who called him into question because of his age, but he proves himself year after year. He’s playing in the Super Bowl again this year, even though no one expected it. He’s always self-confident, calm, and composed. Definitely one of the best quarterbacks I’ve ever seen.”
Claudio Pizarro: “He’s the GOAT. How he gets the ball to his teammates, how he finds solutions and yet always stays calm. What he does in the final minutes and seconds of the game is always just unbelievable. He can decide a game every time.”
WERDER.DE: You could say there are parallels to be drawn between Brady and yourself, Claudio…
Claudio Pizarro (laughs): We’re both over 40 and doing what we love. I think that he’s reorganised his diet like me. If you want to keep it up at this age, you have to go above and beyond to stay in shape. We both do a lot.”
WERDER.de: To finish, the most important question. Who’s going to win the Super Bowl?
Claudio Pizarro: “I’m a Seattle Seahawks fan, who aren’t in the final, so I’ll support the Rams this year. The team has developed fantastically this season. The coach, Sean McVay, is doing a great job. But like I said, Tom Brady can decide the game every time.”
Josh Sargent: “It’ll definitely be a tight game. I don’t think there’ll be more than three points in it. As a Rams fan, obviously I hope that we’ll win the game. Yeah, we’ll win.”
