He is SV Werder’s all-time record goalscorer but he is still hungry. He is the most successful foreign goalscorer in the Bundelisga, and yet he is still hungry. He is a Champions League winner, a six-time Bundesliga winner and a six-time DFB Pokal winner, and still he is hungry. Claudio Pizarro, the man behind these records, is back at the fine age of 39 and the striker remains just as motivated as he was when he first moved to the Weser back in 1999. “It is easy for me to motivate myself. All I need is a ball and the game. That is all,” insisted the new number four for the Green-Whites.

SV Werder have signed the Peruvian striker as a player, not a coach, something Pizarro was very keen to make clear. “My task will be to further help the team with their football and to create goals. My objective is to be in the squad for every game. I want to play. Any player wants that.” Nevertheless, Pizarro and head coach Florian Kohfeldt have made no secret of the fact that there may be periods when he will not be included in the squad.

However, that would then see the Peruvian still fulfilling an important role in the team. “I will carry on helping the younger players with my experience,” he explained. Johannes Eggestein, Josh Sargent and the rest of the team will no doubt benefit from him and his knowledge of the game, just as he learnt a lot from the likes of Marco Bode, Ailton and later Giovane Elber when he joined Bayern Munich. “Having experienced players by my side brought my game forward much earlier,” said Pizarro.
