There’s one particular character trait that Nuri Sahin appreciates above all others: honesty, both in day to day life and in football. It’s a word that Werder’s newcomer used a lot during his first press conference at the Weser Stadium. “I was convinced by my chats with the coach and Frank Baumann”. How come? “Because they were so honest,” commented Sahin. He spoke with a lot of other clubs, however didn’t quite get the feeling that he got with his talks at Werder. “I just felt I was needed at Werder,” said the new number 17.

The Turkish international made clear that there is one thing that he needs: “a straight-talking coach”. Florian Kohfeldt is that man. “I really appreciate his honesty. He is very upbeat and he knows exactly the kind of football he wants his team playing. He lives and breathes football and his values are important to him. I like that a lot” - Sahin on his new coach. Kohfeldt’s values are something that the 29-year old can identify with. At Werder there is a spirit of optimism, the club is ambitious.

Werder have their sights set on European football. It’s an ambitious target. “It isn’t easy, however, it is realistic. I didn’t want to come here if the club’s only aim was to avoid relegation,” commented the midfielder who has played the most part of his career for clubs with big aims. “It’d be nice to end the season towards the top of the table”.   

Sahin played for Borussia Dortmund for 15 years, as well as having spells at Real Madrid and Liverpool. He made one thing clear: “It was very important for me to come to a club with a good stadium and a great atmosphere, a club with values that I can identify with”. Werder is a club that fulfils his wishes. “I’m happy to be here,” summed up an honest Sahin.
