It’s no great surprise that Niklas Moisander is a creature of habit. The Finn goes about his tasks with a sense of stoic calmness. Whether in central defence or in front of the cameras, he cuts a relaxed, experienced and well-drilled figure. During his press conference ahead of the season opener against Worms (Saturday, 15:15 CEST), Moisander emphasised that experimenting is not his style, especially not when preparing for matches. “I always repeat the same routine, whoever the opponent”, he said.

With his rituals, the Finn constructs a sense of inner calm. A quality that will be of vital importance in the Pokal first round clash with Worms. Florian Kohfeldt has suggested that mental preparation will be “the biggest challenge” ahead of the game against the fourth division side. “Constructing a mental fortitude will be even more crucial here than before a Bundesliga game”, said the Werder coach, who’s sure that “If we do that, we will win.”

It’s an attitude that Niklas Moisander shares unequivocally. In his view, each individual must ready himself psychologically for the duel with underdogs Worms. “Everyone needs to find their own way to focus themselves”, he underlined. The experienced defender relies heavily on his pre-match routines. The details of which, he won’t reveal. All he’ll say is, “I know that if I stick to them tomorrow and the day after, I’ll be totally focused.”

Werder will have to be switched on, lest they risk suffering the same embarrassment as two years ago against Lotte. “It was my first game for Werder and a really disappointing one. It’s a warning.” A warning that stands out in the memory of all. The Green-Whites have sharpened their senses, especially given that Florian Kohfeldt has orientated his pre-match preparation around “absolute focus”. His key to success: communicate, communicate, communicate. As well as opponent-analysis, the emphasis has been on the team’s own strengths. “We are, physically and psychologically, well prepared.”
