Theodor Gebre Selassie is not happy. Five minutes before full time, the right-back rescued a point for Werder. For Gebre Selassie however, similar to the other Werder players, there is a feeling that it was not enough. “We wanted to win”, said the goalscorer. “Not satisfied,” said Davy Klaassen, who made his Bundesliga debut against Hannover 96 today. Head coach Florian Kohfeldt spoke to us about “mixed feelings”: “We controlled the game but lacked a bit in the final third. I noticed we had control and patience but we lacked that cutting edge.”

On the game:

Niklas Moisander: “The first game of the season was played with a high intensity. We started well and dominated for the first half-an-hour, before Hannover 96 had a good chance just before the break. In the second half we pressed and really pushed hard for a goal. I felt that we had everything under control and so the result is not what we wanted.”

Theodor Gebre Selassie: “I am happy to score but not happy with the result because it feels like we have dropped two points. We are disappointed because we expected more. We saw that we can create chances, if we play to our full potential. Unfortunately today was not our day.

Davy Klaassen: “No disrespect to Hannover but we were expecting a home win today. Therefore we are disappointed with the result. The whole team feels the same way. The goal we conceded was very frustrating, a silly goal to concede.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “I found that we played well in the first half. Unfortunately we weren’t able to convert the chances that we created and therefore Hannover were able to get back into the game. We played better in the second-half but couldn’t get the result we wanted.“

Florian Kohfeldt: “To summarise, it was not an unfair draw against a very good team. Defensively, other than the goal we conceded, we played well and only conceded two shots, which shows how good our defence was. The goal was conceded due to a mix-up between two defenders – an unlucky lapse in concentration. That’s why I’m not going to be too harsh on the boys. In the end, we have proven that we can stay calm and get a point in a difficult game.”

On taking chances:

Theodor Gebre Selassie:”In the final phases of the game we lacked a clinical edge. We need to be more effective in the attack. We had enough chances to score another goal.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “Having created so many chances, we simply had to win and that’s why we are a bit disappointed.”

Florian Kohfeldt: In conclusion, there were enough chances. Veljkovic, Ludde, Osako and Pizarro all missed opportunities. I felt that throughout the whole game that a goal would come but unfortunately not.

On expectations:

Theodor Gebre Selassie: “It didn’t weigh us down. We have enough quality in the team and just wanted to win. We weren’t nervous at all and didn’t feel any more pressure than usual.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “The goal of qualifying for Europe was discussed with the team, and I’m convinced that we can do it. The goal wasn’t any extra pressure, it was just the first game. Of course we wanted the home win and we didn’t get it, but that has nothing to do with the targets for the season.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “The expectations for the first game of the season are high, especially when you haven’t scored on matchday one for three years. That might have played on our minds a bit, but not the target that we announced this week.”

Niklas Moisander: “There is still a lot of room to improve, but if you want to achieve something great then you have to set the bar high. That didn’t affect us today. Everyone knows that the Bundesliga is difficult as you have to be on top form every game.”

On Max Kruse’s injury:

Florian Kohfeldt: “He took a knock to his thigh. He should’ve come off at half time but he wanted to play on. He tried to carry on but was struggling to walk after half time. I hope that it’s not anything worse than a knock and he’s available for the Frankfurt game. We won’t have any definite news until tomorrow.”

On the impact of Claudio Pizarro:

Florian Kohfeldt: “We noticed that we weren’t as effective down the wings as we would’ve liked to be today, so we were glad that we had someone like Claudio to bring on. He changed our game and we were getting into the box better.”
