Werder head coach Florian Kohfeldt has announced that Max Kruse will wear the captain’s armband for the 2018/2019 season. The 30-year-old takes over from Zlatko Junuzovic, who left the Green-Whites for Salzburg this summer.

“For me as the coach, the captain is a very important figure both on and off the pitch, so I wanted to use pre-season to see what decision would be best for the whole club. Max has the necessary experience for the role: he is the embodiment of a leader and his raw passion for the club is apparent both on and off the pitch. Whether it’s a training match or a Bundesliga game, he always wants to win. That’s why I chose him,” explained Kohfeldt.

Max Kruse is proud to have the armband long-term: “I’m really happy with the decision and the trust that comes with it, both from my manager and teammates. Of course I’m aware of the responsibility that comes with the position; it’s a great honour and I’ll give it my all,” said Kruse.

Max Kruse returned to Werder from VfL Wolfsburg in summer 2016. The Green-Whites’ No. 10 has 63 goals in 218 Bundesliga games.
