It was a tough defeat to take to end 2018 for Werder. “We had to win the game. In the end we left too many chances unfinished,” said head coach Florian Kohfeldt. The Green-Whites end the Hinrunde in mid-table, but the European places are still in reach.
Frank Baumann: “We started the game well, but we had to go in front. We made things too easy for the opposition at the back and had to come from behind again. It’s annoying that we’ve come away with no points, even though we got back into it.”
Maximilian Eggestein: “We just didn’t score. Leipzig didn’t really deserve the lead, we defended it badly. We deserved more. Mistakes happen, but we came back. In the end we lost the game and it leaves a sour taste.”
Davy Klaassen: “The team created a lot of chances, but we didn’t score enough. We put in the effort and we didn’t get our rewards. That’s what’s happened to us again today and we desperately need to work on it during the winter break.”
Florian Kohfeldt: “We got ourselves back into the game after going 2-0 down. Then we had the chances to win and we didn’t take them. We way we played football was good, but the result obviously wasn’t.”
Florian Kohfeldt: “We set ourselves a tough goal before the season. For the football we’re playing, we don’t have enough points. However, the style of football we’re playing is working. I have a team with strong character in the dressing room. I’m looking forward to the Rückrunde.”
Davy Klaassen: “The first eight games were good, and the nine after that weren’t really us. We miss too many chances and we need to work on that during the winter break.”
Frank Baumann: “The conclusion is positive. Compared with the last few years, we’re playing good football. I’m glad about that, but, all in all, we should have got more points in the Hinrunde.”
Max Kruse: “We’ve played great football sometimes, but not got enough points. It’s disappointing, but there’s no need to get carried away. If I wasn’t a positive person, I’d feel like giving up now. I believe in our team 100%. We’ll have a few days break now, relax a bit, and then come back to go full speed ahead.”
Maximilian Eggestein: “We’re not pleased with the last few games. However, we’re not far away from our goals and we have to catch up in the Rückrunde.”
