Werder centre-back Sebastian Langkamp was in good spirits as he greeted journalists in a short press conference on Tuesday. Following ligament damage in his shoulder, Langkamp had good news for all Bremen fans: “The ligament has repaired properly and is working again,” explained the 31-year-old. Head coach Florian Kohfeldt will be pleased to be able to call on his defender once again.

A shoulder injury kept the German limited to the sidelines for just over three weeks. As his teammates enjoyed a rest day on Monday, Langkamp was putting in extra work out on the field. “In recent weeks I have had the opportunity to complete some individual training. As a result I have fewer problems and I’ll have to see how I get by this week,” explained the centre-back.

Saturday’s home match against Mainz 05 is the target for Langkamp’s come back and he made it clear that he wants to regain his position as a regular on Kohfeldt’s team sheet. I would be surprised if I were a contender now. From Matchday 14 onwards, I had the opportunity to show what I can do. I would like to think that I have a good chance of making an appearance,” he continued. Florian Kohfeldt certainly has a decision to make as to who he decides to start in Saturday’s game.

Langkamp was very complimentary of his teammates’ recent performances. “We have definitely earned ourselves a certain degree of comfort within the table,” said the centre-back. For Langkamp, an improvement in form towards the end of the season is still required in order to achieve the personal goals of the team. “The truth is that 50 points and our own points record is simply not enough to reach Europe this season. We are all aware that we need to carry on in the same way as we did against Leverkusen and Schalke. And when we are in reach of the European qualification places with eight games to go, as we are, we have to go for it,” explained a motivated Langkamp. Werder will look to take another step closer to their end of season goals as they host FSV Mainz 05 in the Weser Stadion on Saturday, kick-off 15:30 CET.
