Pizarro, the second oldest Bundesliga goalscorer: At exactly 40 years and 25 days old, Claudio Pizarro is now steadily approaching a Bundesliga record. His goal against Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday, which was scored in his classic, composed manner, momentarily reduced Werder's deficit. As a result, the Peruvian did not only score his first goal since returning to the club in summer, but also moved up to second in the list of oldest Bundesliga scorers. He has now surpassed Manfred Burgsmüller (39 years, 226 days), who caused a storm while playing for Werder in the late 1980s. The oldest player to have scored in the Bundesliga is, of course, also a well-known Werder player. Mirko Votava scored his last goal at 40 years and 121 days old and warned head coach Florian Kohfeldt that he should not give Claudio Pizarro the opportunity to take his title. Should Pizarro score a goal at any time from Matchday 20 onwards, he would then be named the oldest goalscorer. Kohfeldt replied to Votava's wish saying, “Sorry Marko, that won't happen.”

The undefeated run is over: All good things must come to an end and unfortunately that was the case for Werder on Sunday evening against Bayer Leverkusen. Since head coach Florian Kohfeldt took over the Green-Whites on 30th October 2017, the side had never lost a home game in the Bundesliga. The run started with a 4-0 win against Hannover 96 on 19.11.2017 und was followed by a run of 15 home games without defeat. This undefeated run broke the record from 1981 which saw the team go without a loss for 14 games. The coach at the time was Werder legend, Otto Rehhagel. Sebastian Langkamp said after the match on Sunday, “We can be really proud of this run, even though it came to an end today. It was something very special.”

The mid-week game: The Green-Whites have not been afforded a lot of time to think about the recent loss, as they are already back in action on Wednesday afternoon in the DFB-Pokal. SC Weiche Flensburg 08, a fourth-tier side who lost 3-1 to VfB Lübeck at the weekend and currently sit in third in the Reginalliga Nord. As for Bundesliga games, Werder face Mainz on Sunday, kicking-off at 18:00 CET. “It’s good that we have to get back to it so quickly,” said Maxi Eggestein after Sunday's defeat.

The sporting director’s birthday: He’s won the double, been named honorary club captain and is current sporting director for SV Werder Bremen. Frank Baumann definitely belongs to the long list of people that has given everything for the club. Today, the man from Würzburg celebrates his 43rd birthday and so we wish Frank a very happy day and hope for many successful years with us on the Weser. The Green-White family can also sing in the stands tomorrow, as it’s assisstant manager Thomas Horsch’s birthday.
