Different personalities: While head coach Florian Kohfeldt had already decided that Max Kruse will lead SV Werder Bremen as captain this season, he has announced that Niklas Moisander will be his vice-captain. “It’s not a problem for me,” said the Finnish centre-back in the press conference ahead of tomorrow’s DFB-Pokal clash against Wormatia Worms (15:30 CEST). Even without the captain’s armband, Moisander is still a hugely important player for the team – both on and off the pitch. It’s the same for Kruse, but the two players have their differences. “Max and I have two different personalities. He’s a little louder and talks more, whereas I’m calmer and try to talk to the others individually,” revealed Moisander. However, the success of the team comes first for both players, and different personalities can help with this: “I think together we can motivate the team well,” said Moisander.

A good turnout: “Werder? Bremen! Werder? Bremen! Werder? Bremen!” The Werder chants should be heard all around the EWR Arena on Saturday, with around 2,000 fans expected to make the 300-mile journey to Worms for the first game of the season. Tickets are still available for the game in the neutral areas of the ground, but Werder have sold out their allocation.

The first time: The first competitive game of the season is always a special occasion. For Werder goalkeeper Luca Plogmann, however, the game is of even more significance. The 18-year-old will be included in the matchday squad for a competitive game for the first time, as back-up to Jiri Pavlenka. “He’s made a very good impression,” said Florian Kohfeldt, “Luca doesn’t give off the impression that’s he’s nervous.” The Werder head coach spent a lot of time with Plogmann and goalkeeping coach Christian Vander during the pre-season training camp. “In a positive sense, we’ve had clear and serious discussions about what Luca should expect. For now, he’ll go into the new season as our no.2,” said Kohfeldt.

A familiar face: Dimitrios Ferfelis. Striker. 25 years old. Nationality: Greek. Place of birth: Delmenhorst. From 2008 to 2012, the attacker played his football at Werder’s academy. He then went on to play for our Under-19s, scoring 14 goals in 42 games. “I would like to thank Werder for the good education and the great moments,” said the Greek. However, he failed to make the step up to the first team. After spending time at TuS Koblenz, PEC Zwolle, PAS Giannina, PAS Lamia and FSV Zwickau, Ferfelis signed for Wormatia this summer. On Saturday, he’ll come up against the club where he spent his youth career. “I went to the Weser-Stadion as a little boy and I still check up to see what Werder are doing,” he said of his attachment to the club.
