He’s almost back: Ole Käuper is no longer having trouble with the injury he picked up in the DFB-Pokal game against Wormatia Worms and is aiming to return to training in the coming week. “Above all I’m feeling mentally strong,” said the 21-year-old on Friday afternoon. “I was pretty down just after I got injured, because I’d had a good pre-season. Luckily the injury wasn’t too serious and so I’ll be back soon.” The Germany U20 international is currently working in the gym and the pool every day, as well as receiving treatment. Even if the home game against Nürnberg comes too early, Käuper has set himself a clear goal: “I want to get minutes under my belt and play in the Bundesliga. I also want to play in a full Weserstadion.”

International duty: On Thursday evening, Austria and Sweden faced each other in their final game before they kick off their UEFA Nations League campaigns. Austria won the match 2-0, and Florian Kainz was delighted with the victory despite not playing in the game. Ludwig Augustinsson, who played every minute for Sweden at the World Cup, was also unused. Kainz will now face Bosnia and Herzegovina on Tuesday evening, with Augustinsson playing Turkey on Monday.

Harnik’s farewell: The striker made his Austria debut in August 2007 and scored just six minutes after coming on. After eleven successful years playing for his country, Harnik was officially bid farewell last night. He was eligible to play for Austria due to his father being born there and earned 68 caps, also playing in the European Champions in 2008 and 2016. “It was a great honour to be officially recognised in this way. I had a great time playing for Austria and I’d like to thank everyone I met along the way,” said Harnik. One of these people is former Werder captain Zlatko Junuzovic, who was also celebrated by the Austrian FA last night.

A new captain: The game against Ukraine was a very special one for Czech Republic’s Theodor Gebre Selassie. The Werder right-back already has 47 caps for his country, but he led his team out as captain for the first time last night. Selassie’s boys went 1-0 up inside four minutes, but conceded the equaliser just before half time and then lost their opening UEFA Nations League game in second-half injury time. The Czechs will have to get over their defeat quickly however, as they face Russia in their second game of the competition on Monday.

An early return: Johannes Eggestein’s time with the Germany U20 team has ended earlier than planned. The striker has returned to Werder after picking up a slight ankle knock and will train individually this afternoon. Eggestein should be fit for the game against Nürnberg next weekend.

Another friendly: With another nine days to go until the Bundesliga returns, Werder have a second friendly tomorrow. The Green-Whites will take on SV Meppen in Cloppenburg at 15:00 CEST.
