30,000: Claudio Pizarro reached an incredible milestone in the 14th minute of the game against Augsburg at the weekend: 30,000 minutes on the pitch in the Bundesliga. The 3-2 win was also his 235th in the top flight, equalling the record of Franz Beckenbauer. However, he still has a way to go to get to the top of this list, with Oliver Kahn on 310 Bundesliga victories. Pizarro is also chasing another record: the oldest player to start a Bundesliga game. The striker is currently the third-oldest in this respect after starting at the weekend, with Klaus Fichtel (43 years and 184 days) in first place. Pizarro isn’t sure about beating this record, but has second place in his sights. Another former Werder player currently sits in this position – Mirko Votava was 40 years and 225 days old when he last started a Bundesliga game. “I can do it, I’ll catch him,” said Pizarro. He’ll have his chance to do just that on the final day of the Bundesliga season (18/5/2019) against RB Leipzig at home.

Distance isn’t a problem: Maximilian Eggestein’s goal to put Werder 2-0 up at Augsburg was already the club’s third from distance this season. “At first I thought it was a fluke,” said Max Kruse, grinning, “but he did it again, so he must have meant it.”

The silent treatment: Head coach Florian Kohfeldt went for an out-there approach with Florian Kainz. The boss, normally a big fan of communication with his players, didn’t speak to Kainz for three weeks. “I wanted to annoy him a bit, he needs to become more aggressive. He was holding back too much,” said Kohfeldt. This resulted in Kainz having a good game against Augsburg, getting the assist for Max Kruse’s opener. “It was world-class how he got the ball and crossed with his weaker foot,” said Max Kruse. His boss was also pleased with Kainz’s reaction: “It was nice to see how he behaved within the team.”

The drought is over: Max Kruse ended his 189-day wait for a goal against Augsburg on Saturday, getting the opener at the same stadium he got his last goal, back in March. The Werder captain also got the assist for Davy Klaassen’s winner. “I don’t have any doubts that Max will have a great season. He’s on the right track and there’s much more to come from him,” said Florian Kohfeldt.
