Former Werder star happy with development of the team: Per Mertesacker’s farewell game was mainly focussed on the former international’s goodbye, but other ex-Werder players who played also commented on how Werder were playing this season. Patrick Owomoyela, who wore the Werder kit from 2005 to 2008, said he was very satisfied with head coach Florian Kohfeldt and praised the team. Tim Wiese hopes that Werder’s top performances before the international break will continue in the coming weeks. “Werder are in great shape and I hope that the performance levels will not drop,” said the former keeper. “It looks very good at Werder right now and things are going well. The young players are doing well too,” said Fabian Ernst, who sees the Green-Whites as favourites against Schalke 04.

Pizarro at Wembley: Claudio Pizarro had a great weekend. On Friday he played in Werder’s friendly against Osnabrück and on the following day he participated in Mertesacker’s farewell game in Hannover. On Sunday, ‘Piza’ was in London to watch the National Football League (NFL) game between Seattle Seahawks and Oakland Raiders. Goalkeeping coach Christan Vander was also at the game with his family.

Harnik hopes: Martin Harnik is on the sidelines for the second time this season after suffering a thigh injury in the home game against VfL Wolfsburg. The striker hopes to return for the game against Schalke. “I feel good. I hope that I can return to training this week and be fit for the game against Schalke,” said Harnik.

Well distributed: Seven games, nine different goalscorers. Only top-of-the-table Borussia Dortmund boast more goalscorers (13). With13 goals, Werder are the fifth-highest goalscoring team.

20 years ago: When Ailton moved to Werder in October 1998 from Mexico, no one would have thought that the 25-year-old would leave such a legacy at Werder. The most expensive purchase in Werder’s history back then made a difficult start to Bundesliga life. In the end, the Brazilian scored a massive 106 goals in 214 competitive games for the Green-Whites and even celebrated the double in 2004.
