For Werder fans, the game against Eintracht Frankfurt at the weekend was an emotional rollercoaster. It was a game that the Green-Whites’ No. 40 will probably never forget. When Jiri Pavlenka had to go off in the 49th minute due to a head injury, Luca Plogmann got his chance. At just 18 years old, he is the first goalkeeper born in the 21st century to play in the Bundesliga. “It all happened quite quickly and I didn’t really have time to get nervous,” said Plogmann. It was a very special moment for him: “I’ve dreamt of it my whole life,” said the goalkeeper. However, he revealed that it was difficult to be thrown in at the deep end like he was. Even thought he didn’t save the penalty that he had to face as soon as he came on, he can still be proud of himself: “I’m very proud to have made my first senior appearance for Werder. I’d like to have saved the penalty, but in the end the most important thing is that we got the three points."

Onwards and upwards: With four points from two games, it’s Werder’s best start to a season for five years. In each of the last two seasons, Werder had no points at this stage, with one point on the board the campaign prior to that and only two points in 2014/15. The Green-Whites have therefore had a solid start to the season without setting the world alight. “We’ve had an okay start, but we should have won at home to Hannover,” said new signing Davy Klaassen. Werder will now be looking to use the momentum from both league games and their 6-1 DFB-Pokal win against Wormatia Worms to turn their good start into a great one after the international break.

Japanese goalscorers against Frankfurt: Yuya Osako got to celebrate his goal against Frankfurt at the weekend twice. The referee ruled it out for offside at first, but then revoked his decision and gave the goal after consulting VAR. “A goal is a goal,” said the Japan international after the game. Osako’s strike wasn’t just his first Bundesliga goal for the club, it was also the first time a Japanese player had scored for Werder since Yasuhiko Okudera. The left-back made 206 appearances for the Green-Whites between 1981 and 1986, scoring 13 times. The last of these goals came on 15th March 1986 in a 2-0 win against Eintracht Frankfurt.

International-break blues: If can’t wait two weeks for our next game, don’t worry - you don’t have to! Werder take on FC Emmen tomorrow evening (4th September, 18:30 CEST) in a friendly match in Leer. The game will also be shown live on our official Facebook page and YouTube channel. Following that, the team are back in action again next weekend, taking on SV Meppen in a friendly in Cloppenburg.

Sahin’s passion for the game: RSV Meinerzhagen are having to look for a new assistant manager. “I’ve had to give up the job,” said Nuri Sahin in his press conference on Sunday morning. Werder’s new signing often ran training sessions for the side with his brother and his friends, but won’t be able to anymore after leaving Dortmund. He still wants to support his boys as much as possible all the same: “That’s my passion,” he said, adding, “A lot of my friends play for the side and it’s nice to get together after games.” Meinerzhagen won 4-1 at the weekend, so Sahin has reason to be happy. The midfielder’s No. 17 shirt is now available to buy in the club’s online shop.

Individual training: Thanos Petsos and Luca Caldirola will train individually this week with Werder’s Under-23 coaches to regain their fitness. At the end of the week, it’ll be decided whether they will carry on with this programme.
