Successful debut: It is the ninth minute of the first-round tie between SV Werder Bremen and VfR Wormatia Worms and Werder have a free-kick. Florian Kainz whips the ball into the middle and it is headed in perfectly by Yuya Osako. The Japan international showed his class by opening the scoring in a 6-1 rout by Werder. “It sparked off the goalscoring,” said Maximilian Eggestein. “He will be a monster in the air for us,” said Kainz, who provided the assist for Osako. Davy Klaassen also made his debut for SVW and he completed the full 90 minutes, while also winning the penalty for the third goal. It is not so important for Klaassen that he did not score as he explained: “It is more important that we won the game.” Claudio Pizarro made his first appearance since returning to the club for a fourth time after being substituted onto the pitch in the 74th minute but the 39-year-old did not manage to score a goal.

This has never happened before: On 12th August 2017, the Eggestein brothers Maximilian and Johannes played together for SV Werder making them the first ever siblings to have played on the same pitch for the Green-Whites. The Eggestein brothers made history once again at the weekend as it was the first time in the club’s history that two brothers have scored for Werder in the same game. Maximilian scored just before the break to make it 5-1 while Johannes scored our sixth after coming off the bench. It was also a significant goal for younger brother Johannes as it was his first goal for the senior side. “Firstly, I am happy that we won convincingly but most of all I am delighted to have scored my first goal,” explained Werder’s number 24 while brother Maximilian added: “I am so pleased for him.”

Man of the Match: He provided an exemplary assist for Yuya Osako to bag the first of the game and then went on to score the second goal himself in extraordinary fashion. Florian Kainz put in a brilliant performance in the 6-1 win over Wormatia Worms, always a danger on the wing and a threat in front of goal. It was no surprise that the number seven was named Man of the Match. “I am obviously pleased with the award but I am even more delighted with the convincing scoreline,” said Kainz. The goal by the Austria international to make the score 2-0 will stay long in the memory of all Werder fans. “I turned and then just shot with my left foot,” explains the goalscorer but captain Max Kruse got straight to the point as he said: “Congratulations Kainzi, goal of the game.”
Who will we face in the next round? After the final game of the round is finished on Monday evening, 32 teams will be left in the competition. The draw for the next round of matches takes place this Sunday with the games being played on Tuesday 30th and Wednesday 31st October.

Full focus on Hannover: After the excitement of the 6-1 victory against Worms, the focus now turns to the start of the Bundesliga season this coming weekend. “We are all excited about returning to the Weser-Stadion,” explains head coach Florian Kohfeldt, where Bremen will face Hannover on Saturday at 15:30 CEST. Preparations for the first game of the season will begin on Tuesday as the first day of the week is being used as a chance for the players to recover. The players will do two sessions on Tuesday, with an indoor gym session beginning at 10am and then some training on the pitch from 3pm. There will be further public training sessions on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday before the ‘mini northern derby’ against the club from Lower Saxony.
