Building on what wasn’t done well: Werder will quickly shake off yesterday’s disappointment in Mainz, work on the performance and then look ahead to next weekend. This is exactly how the team started their Monday morning after their 2-1 defeat in Mainz. The squad started the new week with a training session on Monday morning and further sessions await the team in the forthcoming days. “We will discuss a lot with the team,” explained Werder head coach Florian Kohfeldt shortly after the final whistle on Sunday evening. Preparations for Werder next home match, against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Weser-Stadion on Saturday afternoon, will begin on Wednesday. Kohfeldt will use Thursday and Friday’s training sessions to fully prepare for the visit of the high flying Foals.

Unstoppable: Claudio Pizarro hasn’t got many more records to break. The Peruvian striker scored his second goal since returning to Bremen in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Mainz, making him the first striker in Bundesliga history to score twice after his 40th birthday. He could extend this record with any further strikes he is able to secure. It wasn’t just his goal that was special, there was a return favour from one of his teammates. ‘Piza’ turned provider in Werder’s victory over VfL Wolfsburg for Johannes Eggestein to score and yesterday, the younger Eggestein brother returned the favour to provide the assist for Pizarro’s consolation strike in Mainz. This combination could be effective once again in Werder’s home clash with Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday (15:30 CET).

Good memories: Yesterday evening, during the match in Mainz, Werder Bremen were drawn to face Borussia Dortmund away from home in the DFB-Pokal third round. The match will take place on the 5th or 6th February 2019. Werder have fond memories of their last trip to BVB in the DFB-Pokal as the Green-Whites came away with a 2-1 victory and a place in the quarter finals of the 2008/2009 competition. After Dortmund took an early lead, Hugo Almeida and Claudio Pizarro turned the match on its head in favour of the Green-Whites. At the end of that season, Werder were celebrating a DFB-Pokal triumph at the Weser-Stadion. Florian Kohfeldt is looking forward to a special away match in the Signal Iduna Park: “You have to accept what you are given. There is always an amazing atmosphere in Dortmund. It will be a superb cup evening!” Werder sporting director Frank Baumann is also looking forward to the cup clash: “We could have been given an easier match. However, we have been given a midweek knockout clash under the floodlights in Dortmund. There isn’t anything nicer. We are looking forward to a great match.”

Double champions: Former Werder coach Viktor Skripnik has enjoyed completing the Latvian league and cup double this weekend. After already securing the Latvian cup, Skripnik’s Riga FC have secured the league title. Riga FC have a six point lead over their nearest rivals going into the final match of the season and are unbeaten in their last eighteen league matches.

Two more successes: Werder eSPORTS players “MegaBit” and “MoAuba” have both qualified for the “Licensed Qualifying Event” of the Global Series this weekend. The ‘best of three’ tournament for qualification was held on Saturday and Sunday and “MoAuba” secured his place in December’s tournament, winning all three matches on Sunday. “MegaBit” defeated two opponents on Sunday and qualified despite losing one fixture. Qualification for the tournament, which uses FIFA 19, is a new landmark for the pair in what has already been a good season to this point.
