Three Bundesliga games, four goals, but none from the captain Max Kruse. Last season, Kruse was involved in 17 goals, 16 of them under Florian Kohfeldt. This season, however his only goal involvement has come in the DFB-Pokal. The captain hasn’t registered a goal or assist in 232 Bundesliga minutes.
However, there is no reason for concern. “Max is still one of our most important players. With his strong finishing and link-up play, he’s vital for us in the final third,” said boss Florian Kohfeldt. When asked whether giving Kruse the captaincy could have had a negative impact on the striker, the Werder coach should his head: “He’s been positive about his role and has become more of a leader, both on and off the pitch. Being captain is definitely a challenge for him, but he’s doing great so far.”
The boss and Kruse are in constant contact, and have discussed his lack of goals. “I’ve talked to him about his contribution in the past few games, and I have this week as well. We want to help him get into more positions where he can show how dangerous he is in front of goal,” said Kohfeldt. Werder’s summer signings provide more options for the boss, but they are also very quick when there’s a turnover of play in a game. It takes time to adapt to a new playing style and this goes for Kruse too. However, Kohfeldt is sure that “Max will get his chances in the final third, and he improves the way we play.”
