Florian Kohlfeldt and a small group of club officials travelled to Manchester just two days ago to meet Klaassen and discuss his potential move to the Bundesliga. “We made our club goals very clear to him: what we want to achieve, how we want to play and what a special club Werder is. I would like to thank those who travelled to England to speak to Davy for doing such a good job.”
Just one year ago, Davy Klaassen captained Ajax in the Europa League final. Since then, he has spent a year at Everton FC but is now looking forward to the challenge ahead at Werder. “The interest I received from the club was definitely an important factor in my decision. I really wanted to know exactly what they wanted from me. I was convinced to join by the ambition shown by the club. I had a very good feeling after meeting Florian Kohlfeldt and I want to prove that I can make a big impact here. The head coach wants to play a very open and attacking style of football and I am really excited about that.”
Davy Klaassen spent his early footballing years at HHV de Zebra’s Hilversum (1999-2003) and HSV Wasmeer (2003-2004), before he joined Dutch record champions Ajax in 2004. The 25-year old has moved through the ranks of the Dutch national side, making his first appearance for the senior team in 2011. Klaassen has made 126 appearances for Ajax in the Eredivisie, scoring 44 goals and winning the league on three occasions. He joined Premier League club Everton FC in 2017. He has been capped 16 times by his country and has scored four goals.
