It’s been confirmed. Davy Klaassen is a Werder player. On Thursday afternoon, Davy landed in Bremen and by Friday morning he had already signed a contract with the club. WERDER.DE spoke to the 25-year old about his ambitions with Werder, his year in Everton and his personality both on and off the pitch.
WERDER.DE: Welcome to Bremen, Davy. How do you feel to be a Werder player?
Davy Klaassen: Thank you! I feel great and I am happy to be here in Bremen. I completed my medical checks and have now signed a contract with the club. It’s all been confirmed and that feels good.
WERDER.DE: What is your first impression of Bremen?
Davy Klaassen: It’s great! The weather is gorgeous. I hope it stays like that (laughs).
WERDER.DE: What was the reason behind you choosing to join Werder?
Davy Klaassen: The most important factors behind my decision was the club’s ambition and the way the manager wants the team to play. I spoke to Florian Kohfeldt in Manchester and he was so enthusiastic about the club’s goals. He explained how he wants the team to play and what role I will play in that. That’s the reason I wanted to join Werder.
WERDER.DE: Last year was difficult for you. You only played seven matches for Everton in the Premier League. Is it a year of your career that you would rather forget about?
Davy Klaassen: No, I want to talk about it. It was not a positive year for me. I want to make more appearances than that, but I did have a great time with my teammates and the staff at Everton. Despite that, I want to be playing week in week out and prove my abilities as a footballer. I hope I can do that here at Werder.

WERDER.DE: What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear Werder?
Davy Klaassen: The first thing I think of is the match between Ajax and Werder a few years ago in the UEFA-Cup. That was the first time I ever watched Werder play. I am aware of Werder’s traditions and I also already know Niklas Moisander from our time together at Ajax. I spoke to him about joining Werder and he only had good things to say.
WERDER.DE: Were his statements a decisive factor in your move?
Davy Klaassen: They weren’t the only reason, but they certainly helped me make my decision. I have known him for a long time and I trust him. I know that he would always tell me the truth.
WERDER.DE: What do you want to achieve with Werder?
Davy Klaassen: We want to improve on last year’s league position. Simply, we want to play better, attractive and attacking football. And win, of course (laughs).
WERDER.DE: The Werder fans want to get to know you. How would you describe yourself as a footballer?
Davy Klaassen: That is a tricky question. Who sits there and talks about their strengths? I would say that I am a typical box-to-box midfielder who is able to score goals. I work hard and I am very focused on my football. I think that is my main strength.
WERDER.DE: And off the pitch?
Davy Klaassen: I am quite relaxed and laid-back. I am quiet, but I think I am quite funny. At least I try to be (laughs).
