The goalkeeping team at SV Werder Bremen has been strengthened with the signing of Stefanos Kapino. The 24-year old Greek keeper arrives from second-division English team Nottingham Forest. Sporting director Frank Baumann commented: “Stefanos has already had a very interesting career. At just 24 he has been able to experience a lot, but will still carry on developing.”

Goalkeeping coach Christian Vander also added: “Stefanos will fit right in with the goalkeeping team here. He is experienced and will still improve and he already knows how the Bundesliga works – all the qualities which we were looking for.”

Stefanos Kapino is already looking forward to the new challenge at Werder:  “I’m really looking forward to playing for Werder Bremen, a team with lots of tradition and fantastic fans. After meeting with the guys at the club I was very keen to join up. I always knew after my spell at Mainz that I would love to return to the Bundesliga, and thus this opportunity was perfect for me, after previously being in Greece and England. There are several great keepers here, and I’m sure that we will give 100% in training and in matches to give the team the best possible chance.”

Stefanos Kapino started his footballing career at Aetos Korydallos, before moving to the youth set-up at Panathinaikos, becoming the youngest keeper in the clubs history in 2011. Three years later he moved to 1.FSV Mainz 05, making two appearances in the Bundesliga. In 2015 he returned to Greece, signing for Olympiakos and winning two league titles plus the Greek cup. Nottingham Forest in the English second-division was his final destination before moving to Werder. Kapino is also the youngest ever player to represent Greece, making his debut aged just 17 years, seven months and 28 days – he currently has nine international caps to his name.
