The relief was clear to see on Aron Jóhannsson’s face at full time. The 28-year-old had been out of action for just over eleven months. Whilst the wait for a competitive outing with the first team will go on for a little longer, the attacker still has reason to be pleased. “I can’t summarise it in any other way – I’m just simply delighted,” he said.
Jóhannsson completed 60 minutes on his return, in the U23’s victory over Lupo Martini Wolfsburg. In this hour, he covered a lot of ground and didn’t back out of any challenges. “I felt really good out there. It was difficult for us in attack because the opposition sat deep for a lot of the game, but I think there were still some positives in my performance,” explained Werder’s number 20.
For the American it was the first step on the way to achieving his aim of stepping out at the Weser Stadium once again. Naturally, the day can‘t come quickly enough for Jóhannsson. “Of course I want to be back in the team and run out at the Weser Stadium again. I will give everything again in training and show the coaches that I am an option. Whenever I have played in the league, I have chipped in with my share of goals or assists,” said Jóhannsson.
The striker has done a lot in the previous months in order to achieve this goal. Along the way, there has been “difficult moments, but I just wanted to be back playing again.” Jóhannsson says that his family has been a great help, as well as a recent example from the Werder squad that spurred him on. “You can say that Fin is a role model to me – he has been through a similar process and is back out there now,” said the 28-year-old.
