Aus Johannesburg berichten Dominik Kupilas und Yannik Cischinsky

Maximilian Eggestein was the face of Werder’s start to the season. The midfielder is currently the club’s top scorer after the first half of the season, with four goals. He’s one of the first names of the team sheet in what is already his fifth Bundesliga season. He’s started all 19 of Werder’s games and has only missed seven Bundesliga minutes this season. “I definitely feel more mature,” said Eggestein.

Whilst his goals were perhaps the main part of his game during the first few games, he had to take over another role after an injury to Philipp Bargfrede. He’s had more defensive tasks to deal with and less chances to score himself. “You shouldn’t rate my performances on goals. I’m satisfied with the Hinrunde,” said Eggestein.

The midfielder’s performances have also likely attracted the interest of other clubs, but Eggestein is not interested: “It’s important to me that I develop and take the next step. So far, I haven’t had time to worry about it.”

This ‘next step’ could come in the shape of international football in the new year. However, Eggestein isn’t focussing on that: “It’s extremely important to play a lot of as young player and getting regular match practice is more important than playing internationally. Of course I dream of playing internationally at some point, but Werder comes first and foremost.”
