The Werder fans were in full voice as Werder beat Hertha Berlin 3-1 in the Weserstadion. The game was also of significance for Florian Kohfeldt, who equaled King Otto Rehhagel’s record of 16 games unbeaten at home. “We won an important home game and put in a good performance, but we shouldn’t get carried away. We don’t need to re-evaluate things after every matchday,” said the Werder boss after the game. “If we want to achieve what we’ve set out to, we have to play like we did today.”

On the game:

Florian Kohfeldt: “It was our most consistent game of the season today. We played good football with high intensity for almost 90 minutes. Everyone wanted to have the ball in every situation, and knew how the others would react. This mentality meant that we also defended consistently well in every situation, especially after losing the ball.”

Davy Klaassen: “The first 15 minutes of the second half weren’t great, but then we got the game under control again. It was an incredible feeling to win, both during the game and afterwards.”

Milos Veljkovic: “We are determined to be brave and push forwards. I think it was our best game this season. Even after we got the first, we kept pushing for the second and third goals. We didn’t want to sit too deep, we wanted to keep high up the pitch. We managed that and had a lot of possession, which was the key today. It’s my role for the corner to stand where I did and luckily I made good contact and got the goal. It’s a very nice feeling to win at home.”

Nuri Sahin: “It was a great evening and I’m glad to be part of the team. It was a very good first half and we have to extend that to 90 minutes.”

Max Kruse: “We’re happy to get three points against Hertha – they’re a team with a lot of quality. We deserved to win and finally showed what we wanted to achieve out on the pitch, like the end of last season. We played really well today. It’s a shame to concede the goal, but we recovered fast and played it forward again, looking for opportunities. The coach set us up perfectly and the system was well though-out. Hertha didn’t expect us to play 4-4-2. It worked because we have enough quality in the squad.

On the start to the season:

Davy Klaassen: “I’m very happy with the wins and the draws. We’ve got a good balance after five games, but I hope we can continue to win in the upcoming games.”

Milos Veljkovic: “It was very important to start well, but it’s still early in the season. We have to just keep doing what we’re doing. We’ve set our goal to qualify for Europe and we want to continue down our current path and not lose sight of our goal.”

Martin Harnik: “That was our best game by far. We have to build on it and go again against Stuttgart.”

Nuri Sahin: “It’s the first time in a long time that Werder have had a top-of-the-table clash, and it’s nice to see. If we win the next few games, then we can start to look at the table.”

Max Kruse: “We’ve improved and want to go even further. We’ve worked for a long time, that’s why we deserve the win today.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “The table doesn’t really mean anything just yet, but we increase our chances of success by how we play football. If we want to get Europe, we have to do our jobs every week and win our games.”

On Nuri Sahin’s first start:

Nuri Sahin: “It was a good feeling. I was able to dictate the play and had a lot of touches of the ball. We talk a lot in the team. It’s something that we need to carry on with, even if it’s not perfect right now. I’m very happy to be here and just want to enjoy my football.”

Milos Veljkovic: “Nuri has great experience. He was in charge and played really well.”

Max Kruse: “Nuri has a lot of quality, we need players like that. We don’t lose any quality with one player dropping out and another coming in.”

On the Stuttgart game:

Nuri Sahin: “We have to travel to Stuttgart confident, and our goal has to be to get three points.”

Milos Veljkovic: “We want to win against Stuttgart and get the three points.”

Florian Kohfeldt: “It’s important that we recover well, sleep well and train well. Then we go again for the win in Stuttgart. We have to play like we did today – it’s not impossible.
