You could see the frustration leaving Martin Harnik’s face in his celebration on Friday evening. It was the striker’s first Bundesliga goal since the end of September. “I was delighted because it was an important goal in an important game. That’s what you hope for as a striker,” added Harnik.
The forward now has four goals in all competitions this season. “I haven’t missed many chances, so I didn’t doubt myself,” said Harnik. The start of his season was affected by minor injuries; a hamstring strain at the start, muscular problems – there were a few. He hasn’t completed 90 minutes so far this season. He’s come on four times, he’s gone off injured three times, and he’s been an unused substitute twice.
Because of this, Harnik isn’t content: “I want to be important and I want to be a first-team regular. To do that, you have to put in the performances, and we haven’t been doing that in the last few weeks.” Harnik doesn’t doubt himself: “I haven’t lost my grit. I’ve been around for a while and I’ve experienced a lot of situations. That includes times where I’ve missed a lot of chances.” On Friday, the striker made no mistake in converting his chance.
