Last night’s DFB-Pokal thriller will be remembered in our 120 year history! A cup tie which had everything you could wish for: drama, ecstasy and a Werder victory. “It was a fight over the whole 120 minutes, which we won through smart play and passion,” said head coach Florian Kohfeldt following the 4-2 (3-3 AET) penalty shoot-out victory over Borussia Dortmund.

Here is the post-match reaction to the victory in Dortmund.

On the game:

Florian Kohfeldt: “It was a dramatic game with many twists and turns. I have to congratulate the team on the way they dealt with the setbacks we faced. It was a fight over the whole 120 minutes, which we won through smart play and passion”

Max Kruse: “It was a very intense game and our tactics were effective. We didn’t want to allow Dortmund to play their way and we managed to do that in large phases of the match. We deserved it in the end after the way we fought.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “We played very well today. The team had a plan and we kept fighting even after conceding. It is an unbelievable experience.”

Nuri Sahin: “We always want to win, and demonstrated that in an impressive way today. At 3-2 I thought to myself that it wasn’t over yet. That’s the magic of the cup.”

Claudio Pizarro: “The final in Berlin is very special – I’ve told all the boys about it. Of course we want to be there but there’s still a long way to go.”

On the penalty shoot-out:

Max Kruse: “I was ready to take the final penalty. I’ve always been very confident from the spot, but I was also glad that Jiri had saved the first two.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “I know Eric Oelschlägel from the U23s at Werder. I’m happy to have scored my penalty. We did everything right today.”

Jiri Pavlenka: “We’re through to the next round and it feels amazing. I’m not sure why but I just knew that I was going to save the first two penalties.”

Nuri Sahin: “I was always confident that Max would convert the last penalty. He has never missed, so why would he have today? (laughs).”

On the Augsburg game:

Florian Kohfeldt: “The fixture list is playing into our hands a little bit. We can take some time to refresh and then have two full days to prepare for Augsburg. It’s a must-win game for us.”

Max Kruse: “We played very well today and finally got the result that our performance merited. Tonight we can celebrate a little, but tomorrow the focus is on Augsburg – it’s a huge game.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “Our hard work was finally rewarded today and we have to show more of the same in the Bundesliga. On Sunday we have the chance to do exactly that.”

Nuri Sahin: “Today’s result is a confidence booster that we can take into the Bundesliga. We demonstrated our strong mentality today. Every week we have to push on and work on our performance. Now we’re looking ahead to our next task – Augsburg on Sunday.”
