SV Werder Bremen’s first-team players will be treated by a new team doctor during the upcoming season, sporting director Frank Baumann confirmed. “We will change our current medical staff. This is due to the rise in demand for our team doctor’s services. We respect the decision of our current physician, Dr. Philip Heitmann, to pursue the development of his own medical practice. We’re certain that we will cross paths again in the future and would like to wish Philip Heitmann all the best for the future.”

Heitmann’s successor will be Dr. Benjamin Schnee, the head of sports medicine in the orthopaedics department at the Bremer Paracelsus Clinic, who will enter into a partnership agreement with SV Werder Bremen in the future. “We want to increase the level of medical care we are able to offer our senior squad and are excited to have found a competent partner in the Paracelsus Clinic and in Dr. Benjamin Schnee. The goal is to open a clinic in our dressing room area in order for our players to always have a place to go for medical help. Dr. Benjamin Schnee will begin his duties during pre-season,” said Baumann.

Dr. Schnee is excited to take on the new challenge, and said “The world of professional sports is a special challenge, even for medical practitioners. I’m looking forward to supporting SV Werder Bremen and embarking on this new path together. I’m certain that this is the start of a long, trust-filled partnership between Werder and the Paracelsus Clinic.”

Dr. Schnee will continue to be supported by current team physicians, Dr. Daniel Hellermann and Dr. Christoph Engelke.

Philip Heitmann, who received an official send-off from Werder’s sporting director and head coach Florian Kohfeldt ahead of the last home game this past season, has been with Werder since 2005. In addition to his work with Werder, he also runs his own successful clinic. He looks back on his time with Werder fondly: “Working with the players, whether in the youth academy or the first team was always a lot of fun for me. However, having my own practice and the rising demand for medical care for the players took up an enormous amount of time. I wanted to have time for my family, as well as to be able to focus fully on my own practice, for the good of my patients. I would like to thank all of my co-workers one last time. I will continue to wish Werder well and we will likely continue to see each other regularly in the stadium.” a
