Florian Kohfeldt has a lot of difficult decisions to make these days. Philipp Bargfrede and Niklas Moisander have both returned from their respective injuries and are in the mix to start against Mainz. Johannes Eggestein, Florian Kainz and Martin Harnik, amongst others, also performed well in the DFB-Pokal mid-week. Florian Kohfeldt will have a selection headache, but it’s a good problem to have.

Philipp Bargfrede (muscle strain) and Niklas Moisander (muscular injury) are available for the game against Mainz on Sunday, and other players are in contention after playing well in the cup. Johannes Eggestein, who had a strong game against Flensburg, is “an option for the starting XI, but has been all season,” according to Kohfeldt.

Eggestein was playing on the wing during the week, along with Florian Kainz. The young forward was very involved in and around the Flensburg penalty area, and won the spot-kick that was converted by Davy Klaassen. Kainz also added his name into the mix for a starting place, getting a goal and an assist against the fourth-tier side.

Martin Harnik also contributed to the win, scoring a brace after coming off the bench in the second half. Milot Rashica is another name who will be hoping for more minutes on the pitch, after showing an improvement in training recently. Kohfeldt is “please that Milot is developing well. He’s worked hard in training and improved, especially defensively.”

The competition for places in the Werder team at the moment is extremely high, and it looks like it’ll stay that way for the game against Mainz on Sunday (18:00 CET). However, one thing is already clear from this season so far: every player is ready to perform should they be called upon.
