A loud uproar in the 67th minute which shook the Weser Stadium announced the return of Claudio Pizarro. The almost 40-year-old legend stepped onto the pitch under raucous applause and put in a good shift in front of the Werder faithful.
The introduction of Pizarro changed the game completely, with chances being created one after the other. Pizarro himself had three big chances to win the game but could not convert. “Very impressive,” stated Niklas Moisander. “The fact that he comes on to the pitch and immediately creates chances for himself and others is impressive,” said Theodor Gebre Selassie.
Werder’s goalscorer, Gebre Selassie could only smile when talking about the numerous chances that presented themselves to Pizarro. “Somehow the ball always finds him, and not the other way round,” he said. However, Pizarro’s dream return was not meant to be, as Werder only managed to get one point in his 447th Bundesliga game. “He was unlucky,” said Maximilian Eggestein.
In the 76th minute, with adrenaline pumping round his body from his introduction, the Peruvian had a big opportunity to nod Werder into the lead but could not convert. “How he is able to create these opportunities for himself shows his quality,” said Florian Kohfeldt. “He’s still able to score!”
