Werder took the three points in a frantic game against Augsburg, but boss Florian Kohfeldt took negatives as well as positives from the game. “We have a very good mentality in the team,” said Frank Baumann, and this no-doubt helped the Green-Whites get the win after the home side’s comeback.

On the game:

Florian Kohfeldt: “It was a pretty frantic game and I’m relieved that we won. It’s not an away performance we can say we’re completely satisfied with, but it’s not like we stole the points. Both sides had chances. After we went in front, we didn’t play calmly enough. They scored either side of half time and suddenly it’s a mental challenge again. In this phase we tried a lot of things and also left room for the counter attack. We need to play our own style regardless of the scoreline and we didn’t do that today.”

Claudio Pizarro: “I’m very happy with the win. That was the most important thing – especially after the draw against Nürnberg, we wanted to make amends today. We got ourselves into trouble just before and just after the break, however. We should have controlled things when we went 2-0 up, but we reacted well and fought hard.”

Max Kruse: “We conceded at bad times and we looked unconvincing. We have to be stronger and impose our style of play on our opponents much more. We didn’t succeed with that today. Either way, we’re happy that we got the luck to take the three points back tonight, as that’s the only thing that matters. We had a ton of luck on our side today.”

Martin Harnik: “We made too many mistakes today. We were under a lot of pressure after Augsburg equalised, but fortunately we didn’t concede. Spaces started to open up when they started to tire, but the goal was a gift from the goalkeeper.”

Davy Klaassen: “The first half an hour was okay, but then we conceded two goals out of nothing and we were under the cosh for 20 minutes. We shouldn’t have lost the lead like we did. In the end, it’s an important win for us. We gave a goal away towards the end of the game against Nürnberg, but we didn’t today. We didn’t give them a sniff in the final few minutes.”

Maximillian Eggestein: “That was very lucky and we definitely weren’t at our best. We didn’t play how we wanted to and Augsburg did well. We were lucky that we didn’t go behind. We’d rather play badly and win than play well and lose, but we’ll need to discuss what went wrong today.”

Frank Baumann: “It was a pity that we conceded when we did. It was all them after half time. It was similar to the Frankfurt game today, but the goal didn’t come as late. We were happy to go 3-2 up, but we’d been playing well leading up to the goal. We’re glad that we’ve won a very tough away game here. I think that there will be few teams who score three goals here in Augsburg, there are no easy games in the Bundesliga. We have a good mentality in the team, which is how we fought back to win after conceding twice.”

On the goals:

Max Kruse: “Firstly a huge compliment to Kainzi, it was world-class how he got the ball and then crossed with his weaker foot. I like to lurk at the far post and the ball was outstanding so I just had to nod it in.”

Claudio Pizarro: “I told Maxi he had to shoot more because he’s got a really good shot. I’m happy that he’s been scoring lately.”

Maximillian Eggestein: “Tim Borowski told me to shoot again today, it’s worked twice now. We were happy with Davy’s goal, but I didn’t like how the Augsburg fans reacted to Fabian Giefer’s mistake. I feel sorry for him, but I’m happy that we won.”

On the number of points on the board:

Claudio Pizarro: “The start of the season has been okay. We dropped two points against Nürnberg on Sunday and we wanted to win. We’re currently in fourth place and that’s where we want to end up, but it’s a long season.

Florian Kohfeldt: “I don’t want to make a comment so early in the season. Our number of points is okay, but it could be more. In terms of performances, there have been times we’ve played well and we’ve still got things we need to work on. We still need time.”

Martin Harnik: “We’ve won away twice and dropped points at home twice, so it’s pretty balanced. We want to improve in many areas.”

On Pizarro’s start:

Florian Kohfeldt: “He earned it. He holds up the ball well and brings a different element to our game. With Augsburg’s high pressing, we put him in to play over the top with long balls and it worked. He had two huge chances and played a big part in today’s win.”

Claudio Pizarro: “I haven’t played for a long time, but I’m happy. I’m feeling good and it’s good to play again.”

On the Hertha game:

Davy Klaassen: “Hertha have started very well, but we want to win all our home games. It’ll be a difficult match between two good teams.”

Maximilian Eggestein: “We don’t have a lot of time to prepare. We’ll rest tomorrow and then we’ll start watching videos of Hertha on Monday. The three wins speak for themselves.”

Martin Harnik: “Hertha will be a tough game, but we’re playing at home and we want to get the three points. There is still room for improvement.”
