Following an intense and tiring training camp in Zillertal, manager Alexander Nouri’s men await their next test, which comes on Saturday, 15th July 2017. Then, SV Werder will partake in the 2017 Telekom Cup in Borussia-Park – Borussia Mönchengladbach’s home ground. For years the Telekom Cup has proved to be an entertaining preseason tournament, with this year’s participants being Borussia Mönchengladbach, FC Bayern München, and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, alongside Werder. Zlatko Junuzovic and Co. face Gladbach in the semi-final at 14:00 CEST. The games will be 45 minutes long and in the event of a draw at the end of the 45 minutes, then it will be immediately decided via a penalty shootout.

Find out everything you need to know on the friendly against Borussia below.

Did you know, that…

… the Green-Whites have fared well in knockout games at Borussia Park in the past? Werder triumphed 4-3 in the 2015/16 DFB-Pokal game at Borussia Park, which secured them a place in the quarter-final. Janek Sternberg, Jannik Vestergaard – who was a SV Werder player at that time -, Claudio Pizarro, and Anthony Ujah scored the goals.

… Max Kruse can forget about old friends for 90 minutes? Kruse played for Borussia Mönchengladbach from 2013 to 2015, scoring 25 goals for them in this time. However, the Werder striker has also been effective against his old club on multiple occasions in the past, having scored four goals against the Fohlenelf in seven games. Werder fans would have no complaints seeing him build on this record come Saturday.

… Former Werder centre-back Jannik Vestergaard has a new partner in Gladbach’s defence? Former BVB defender and World Cup winner Matthias Ginter was signed by Borussia in order to cover the loss of Andreas Christensen, who returns to Chelsea after a successful two-year loan spell with the Fohlenelf. Saturday’s game could feature former Werder centre-back Jannik Vestergaard partnered with Ginter to form a pairing in the heart of Gladbach’s defence. There have been signings at the centre of midfield for Borussia too, with Denis Zakaria, formerly of BSC Young Boys, joining the club as Mahmoud Dahoud’s successor, who has gone to BVB. Vincenzo Grifo has become a Foal too, after leaving SC Freiburg for Borussia, and is someone that Delaney, Bargfrede and the rest of the team will certainly have to look out for on Saturday, as Grifo has scored two goals in three games against SV Werder.

… SV Werder fans should have hope if the game goes to penalties? The Green-Whites’ history shows that penalties have been a strong-suit for the club. SV Werder have won nine of fourteen penalty shootouts. Meanwhile, Borussia have a negative record of 12 losses on penalties, having only won five of their seventeen. Should it come to down to a shootout, then it would certainly make for an exciting spectacle. In addition, the Green-Whites will have positive memories of penalty shootouts in the Telekom Cup, after they won two penalty shootouts to lift the trophy back in 2012, when they last took part in the tournament.
