There’s a first time for everything! VfB Stuttgart are undefeated at home under Tayfun Korkut and so SV Werder Bremen will be looking to build on the positive performance against Leipzig and dish out the hosts’ first home defeat of the season on Saturday at 15:30 CEST. Goals will no doubt be crucial to that task and Werder have made a habit of scoring in Stuttgart. The Green-Whites have scored 176 times in Stuttgart; the most they have scored against any team in top-flight football. It is therefore about time Werder break down VfB’s home strength because let’s face it, if we don’t, then who will?

Previous encounters: The fixture between the two sides in the first half of the season, as so often has been the case in the Weserstadion under Kohfeldt, saw the guests leave empty handed. Werder walked away 1-0 winners after Max Kruse got the goal shortly before half time. The fixture on matchday 32 of the 2015/16 season was rather more impressive however as Werder battered Stuttgart 6-2. Two goals from Fin Bartels, one apiece from each of Claudio Pizarro, Levin Öztunali and Anthony Ujah and indeed an own-goal from Federico Barba saw the tally rise to such a height. The defeat was rather more significant for Stuttgart as that season saw them relegated to Bundesliga 2, while the Green-Whites secured their own safety in spectacular fashion on matchday 34 against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Secure safety: The 1-1 draw at home to RB Leipzig was another important step towards ensuring Bundesliga football next season. “We would have loved to have won last week because it would have put it beyond doubt. So for the minute we’re still not out of the woods,” said Max Kruse with a smirk but also with slight concern as Werder still need to pick up points in order to be mathematically safe. The Green-Whites therefore will be looking to put this matter to bed on Saturday and break the 40 point mark at the same time. “Our desire to secure safety is very high,” explained head coach Florian Kohfeldt in the pre-match press conference on Thursday. Werder have a seven point gap to Freiburg who currently sit in the playoff place in 16th. Werder boast a far superior goal difference to Freiburg; +2 in comparison to -24 but head coach Kohfeldt has only one thing in his mind, “We have to get away from thinking about the table situation. Instead we just need to think about how much we want to win our next game.” Kohfeldt and his boys will be looking to get a huge three points on the board away from home and be, as Max Kruse put it, “safe beyond doubt”.

Florian Kohfeldt on the game: VfB Stuttgart will no doubt be a difficult test for the Green-Whites. Tayfun Korkut and his team have improved significantly since their change of manager, as Kohfeldt noticed, “The improvemenst they have made under their new manager is impressive. I think that they are the most disciplined team in the league.” He and his backroom staff have already looked at Stuttgart’s strengths and weaknesses. “They defend well and are tough to play against because they concede very few goals. In Mario Gomez they have a player who can decide games on his own and to whom we can’t afford to give chances,” explained coach Kohfeldt. “We need to be aggressive in getting the ball back and be well disciplined with our formation so that we give Stuttgart little room to manoeuvre,” continued Kohfeldt. Long periods of possession for Stuttgart should not be expected as SVW will go out there and try to grab the game by the scruff of the neck. “We need to be patient and capitalise on the chances we get. We need to let out quality shine through,” explained Kohfeldt.

The Moisander factor: Just how important the Finnish player is to Werder was clear to see in the home game against Leipzig. Niklas Moisander did not just score the opening goal for the Green-Whites but was also directly involved in five attacks and had the chance to get his second – all that as a centre-back! His return from suspension also ensured Werder were solid at the back for the majority of the game. His performance last weekend along with his 84% passing accuracy and passion were all a clear indicator of how vital he is to the team. It is not only Moisander however that may cause the Stuttgart attack problems as they themselves have stuggled this season, scoring only 14 goals at home. Only SC Freiburg have managed fewer in front of a home crowd. So long may their troubles continue, as the Green-Whites head to the Mercedes-Benz Arena on Saturday afternoon.
