To finish the busy three-game week, SV Werder face SC Freiburg at the Weserstadion on Saturday (15:30 CEST). The Green-Whites will be looking to pick up from where they left off after a strong second-half showing against Wolfsburg. “We want to take the next step against Freiburg and be more clinical in front of goal,” said Green-White head coach Alexander Nouri. A win against Christian Streich’s side would be the first of the season for Nouri’s men, who want to create their own luck in front of the opposition goal.

Breisgau expert: After being introduced to the game against VfL Wolfsburg, Philipp Bargfrede gave his team a significant boost, once again demonstrating his importance to the team. “You can always rely on Bargi. He’s an important player in our team structure,” praised Alexander Nouri. And the midfielder in particular will be looking forward to the game this Saturday, knowing he has won seven of his eight matches against Freiburg.

The sides’ last encounter: In the last meeting between Werder and Freiburg, Thomas Delaney certainly left his mark. Werder’s vice captain netted a hat trick and was, therefore, the match winner. In the end, the Green-Whites celebrated a 5-2 away win, but in the first half of last season’s campaign, Werder were beaten 3-1 by the same opponents.

The coach’s quotes on the game: Nouri knows of his side’s upcoming opponents’ strengths: “Freiburg are a team with some great runners, who are always hard to play against. They’ll demand everything of us.” Jerome Gondorf shared his boss’ view: “We’ll give everything on Saturday and then we’ll see in the end what happens. We’re ready to make the luck that we’ve been lacking."

Personnel update: Lamine Sané, who missed the midweek game against Wolfsburg, and Thomas Delaney are carrying injuries. Both are suffering from slight knee problems: “They’re in our plans for the game against Freiburg. We’ll see tomorrow how things look,” explained Nouri at the press conference ahead of the game.

A triple reunion: When Werder come up against Freiburg, three former Green-Whites will face their old team. Freiburg’s assistant coach Florian Bruns, as well as players Nils Petersen and Aleksandar Ignjovski all used to ply their trade in Bremen. “Iggy” was at Werder from 2011 to 2014, before moving to Frankfurt and then Freiburg, while Nils Petersen wore the Green-White jersey between 2012 and 2015, scoring 18 Bundesliga goals in 69 appearances.

The referee: Robert Hartmann will officiate the match. Earlier this year, he oversaw Werder’s 3-0 win against Schalke 04. His assistants will be Christian Leicher, with Benedikt Kempkes as the fourth official and Günther Perl as the video assistant.
