It’s the game that every Werder fans looks forward to. The 107th Nordderby is just around the corner. The match between Hamburger SV and SV Werder kicks off at 18:30 CEST on Saturday at the Volksparkstadion. “We are looking forward to the game and we know how important the match is for every Werder fan,” head coach Alexander Nouri said at the press conference. According to a man experienced in derbies, Werder sporting director Frank Baumann, it all comes down to two things in the Nordderby: “We have to play with passion and keep a cool head.”

The two sides’ last encounter: The Green-Whites won 2-1 in the last Nordderby in April through a Florian Kainz goal. After Michael Gregoritsch fired HSV into the lead early on, Max Kruse equalised before Kainz’s winner. The Nordderby in the first half of the season ended in a 2-2 draw.

The twelfth man: The away section of the Volksparkstadion is completely sold out. Around 6,000 Werder fans are expected to make the trip to Hamburg. The Green-Whites can count on having phenomenal travelling support for this crucial clash as always.

The pre-match quotes: Every Werder player knows that this game is like no other: “We know how big this game is for the club and for the fans. It is the most important game of the year,” vice-captain Niklas Moisander said. Head coach Alexander Nouri knows what his team will face on Saturday evening: “There will be lots of tackles flying in and we will have to fight for the second ball. And we’re up for the challenge.”

The derby experts: The Green-Whites were definitely the experts in the 2003/04 season. Werder beat Hamburger SV 6-0 in our double-winning season. The goals came courtesy of Valérien Ismael, Ivan Klasnic, Ailton, Nelson Valdez, Viktor Skripnik and an own goal from Sergej Barbarez. That’s SV Werder’s biggest ever win against HSV to date.

The reunion: Both of these players are used to a derby. Christian Mathenia and Jerome Gondorf both played in a few Hessen derbies when they were at Darmstadt 98. Now they are coming up against each other for the first time in a Nordderby. Whilst HSV ‘keeper Mathenia made his first derby appearance last season, it is Werder midfielder Jerome Gondorf’s first taste of Nordderby action.

Team news: This news is sweet music to the ears of Werder fans. Werder captain Zlatko Junuzovic is an option for the Nordderby: “He has trained well,” Alexander Nouri explained. It is still to be seen whether Lamine Sané and Ludwig Augustinsson will be fit in time to play.

The referee: Deniz Aytekin will be in charge of the 107th Nordderby. He refereed SV Werder’s 2-0 away victory at Mainz 05 in February. He will be assisted by Christian Dietz and Eduard Beitinger. Meanwhile Markus Häcker will be the fourth official and Günter Perl is the video assistant.
