The Green-Whites will be back in action this Friday! Florian Kohfeldt’s team will open the Bundesliga’s 25th matchday along with Borussia in Mönchengladbach (KO 20:30 CET). In the table of the second half of the season, it’s a match between 16th-placed Werder and 15th-placed Gladbach. But fans shouldn’t let themselves be misled. “They haven’t always been rewarded with points, but I’m expecting us to be playing against a stabilised Gladbach team. Borussia will be very organised,” says head coach Florian Kohfeldt. Nevertheless, Zlatko Junuzović stresses that the Green-Whites will play with their heads held high after the derby win.

Recent matches: Werder have faced Borussia Mönchengladbach in front of a Bremen home crowd in the two sides’ last two meetings and have lost both matches. A sole goal provided the decisive moment in the first of those two matches. Thorgan Hazard scored that goal for the Fohlenelf in the second half of the 2016-17 season in only the twelfth minute. Werder looked relatively harmless and could not equalise. Pavlenka and Co. suffered a 2-0 loss in the first half of the current season, conceding in the 27th and 34th minute. Lars Stindl and former Werder man Jannik Vestergaard dealt the knockout punches just seven minutes apart. However, Werder embarked on a very successful run after this match with nine wins and two draws.

The head coaches: Schalke, Freiburg and Hamburg all lined up defensively to face Werder in recent weeks, but Florian Kohfeldt is expecting a different situation this weekend. “Borussia’s formation won’t be influenced by us – they’ll try to play their own way,” says the Werder boss, who has been full of praise for Gladbach’s combination play. Kohfeldt urges: “We have to secure the ball and pass well when we’re in possession because they make runs high up the pitch. They have rapid players in Kramer and Zakaria, who own spaces and have a physical presence in the centre of the pitch. They’re very stable and reliable defensive midfielders.” The coach sees opportunities to outdo the high-quality eleven from Gladbach on the counter. “It’s an element of our play which can’t be underestimated.”

Gladbach’s injury list: Tobias Strobl, Ibrahima Traoré, Fabian Johnson, Oscar Wendt, Raffael, László Bénes, Mamadou Doucouré, Michaël Cuisance... The Mönchengladbach injury list is not a short one at the moment. “To his credit, he doesn’t talk about it all day, but he is fighting with an unbelievably long list of injuries,” Kohfeldt praises fellow coach Dieter Hecking. Tony Jantschke and Denis Zakaria, who had to come off in Borussia’s 1-0 win against Hannover, are now fit again.

Fit for Friday: As in last weekend’s Nordderby, Kohfeldt is spoilt for choice. Apart from long-term injuries Fin Bartels, Michael Zetterer and Ole Käuper, all Green-Whites are fit to play and available for selection in Friday’s squad. “It’s a fantastic situation for me as the coach,” says Kohfeldt. “All the players are ready to give their all in training and that raises the quality in training,” he continues. Werder fans do not have to worry about Jiri Pavlenka, who had to leave training early on Wednesday. “It was just a step to give Jiri some rest; he’s already trained,” the head coach explained in the press conference.
