There will be a rare trip east for SV Werder Bremen on matchday 13 in the Bundesliga, with the Green-Whites set for a 15:30 CET kick-off at RB Leipzig’s Red Bull Arena on Saturday afternoon. The target is a first away win of the league campaign following on from last week’s long-awaited maiden victory. As Champions League participants and currently sitting third in the table, the Saxony club could certainly be described as heavyweight opposition, but the toughest tasks are usually the most enticing, and there will 5,500 Werder fans offering their support too. While Bremen go into the game as outsiders, they’re not without their chances in Leipzig.

Previous meetings: In Werder Bremen’s 54-year Bundesliga history, there have been plenty of derbies against HSV and a number of memorable clashes with the likes of Bayern and Dortmund, but there have only been two games against RB Leipzig. The very first meeting last season was far too welcoming from the Green-Whites, as the Bundesliga new boys claimed a 3-1 win. There was some payback in the second half of the campaign though, as the Austrian trio of Zlatko Junuzovic, Florian Grillitsch and Florian Kainz fired us to a 3-0 win at the Weser-Stadion.

Kohfeldt on #RBLSVW: “Leipzig play fast-paced, aggressive football, coupled with individual quality,” said the head coach ahead of Saturday’s game. Despite Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side involved in a midweek European match, Kohfeldt still anticipates a fit and motivated opponent. “I expect them to look to play their own game against us and come at us at speed. It doesn’t matter whether they played a match on Tuesday or not.” Nevertheless, the 35-year-old is confident going into matchday 13 and is hoping for his side to kick on from the 4-0 win over Hannover. “For us, it’s about playing with courage and enjoying our football, just like we did last week. If we do that, we will get our chances. Our aim is to take something from the game.”

The captain on confidence and focus: “The game against Hannover obviously gives us a boost, and we need to use that against Leipzig,” said Zlatko Junuzovic. Apart from the added confidence, the Austrian believes a week of focused training allows him to look to Saturday’s game with optimism. “We enjoyed the home win for a little while, but then it was back to the grind in training, and everyone has been giving it their all. We will need that mindset in Leipzig too.”

Proceed with caution: Florian Kainz remains the only Werder player to be one yellow shy of a suspension.

The referee: Sascha Stegemann will officiate the match. It’s the first Werder game this season for the 32-year-old, although the public administrator from Nieserkassel did referee the first-round DFB-Pokal win over Würzburger Kickers as well. He will be assisted by Christian Fische and Mike Pickel on Saturday. Guido Winkmann is the fourth official, with VAR being monitored by Wolfgang Stark and Robert Kempter.
