Neither side will want fear to dominate their play this weekend. Borussia Dortmund have historically disliked playing against the Green-Whites, losing on 41 occasions; the only team they have been more frequently beaten by is FC Bayern Munich. Out of the 49 meetings between the two sides in the Weserstadion, it has been the home team that have been victorious 31 times. The Weserstadion has been somewhat of a fortress under Florian Kohfeldt. The Green-Whites have gone unbeaten at home in all of Kohfeldt’s ten matches there. Dortmund however have been Werder’s kryptonite of late, with the Green-Whites losing 11 of the last 13 matches between the sides. Nevertheless Werder will be encouraged by their most recent match against Dortmund and will be looking to do the same when the match kicks off on Sunday at 18:00 CEST.

Previous encounters: All Green-Whites fans remember the game in the SIGNAL IDUNA earlier in the season fondly. Werder took home all three points with a huge 2-1 victory. Maximilian Eggestein got the opener for the Green-Whites but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who now crafts his trade at Arsenal, got the leveller after the break. The Green-Whites were not discouraged however and Theodor Gebre Selassie again put Werder ahead in what proved to be the decisive goal. The memories from last season’s encounter on matchday 34 is remembered less fondly, with the Green-Whites leaving the Ruhr area 4-3 losers. Goals from Zlatko Junuzovic, Fin Bartels and Max Kruse were not enough to overturn Dortmund as they finished in the Champions-places.

Force at home: Hannover, Stuttgart, Mainz, Hoffenheim, Hertha BSC, Wolfsburg, Hamburg, Köln, Frankfurt and Leipzig. The list grows ever longer. These teams are those that have gone left Werder with nothing more than a point in their pockets while Kohfeldt has been at the helm. The last time a run has stretched to ten games was back between April 2005 and February 2006. The Green-Whites’ defence as well as their attack has been firing as in the last ten games only seven games have been conceded. So Pavlenka, Veljkovic and co are no doubt to be applauded.

Weak away: BVB have struggled away from home of late too, being pointless and goalless in their last two games on the road. The last time that they won away from the Ruhe area was back in February, so Werder will no doubt be looking to secure Bundesliga safety for next year in spectacular fashion with three points against the Champions League-hopefuls.

Team news: Ludwig Augustinsson, Aron Jóhannsson and Luca Caldirola are all on the mend. Florian Kohfeldt will have decisions to make as all three will likely be available for selection come the weekend. A small question mark still lies over Niklas Moisander, who had to cut a training session short earlier in the week.

Cause for celebration: With an appearance at the weekend Max Kruse will have put on a Green-White jersey for the 50th time. The 30-year-old has already scored 21 and assisted 16 times in that time and will no doubt be looking to add to that tally on Sunday. Kruse is the top goal-scorer at the club for both this season and last – long may it continue Max!
